Betty Arlene Burkey White

Betty Arlene Burkey White, 88, of 118 Castle Church Road, Chapin, SC, formerly of Reading, PA,  died Monday, April 30, 2012 at her residence.

Born on January 26, 1924 in Reading, PA, she was the daughter of the late Marie Cutler and Lloyd R. Burkey, Sr.

Mrs. White was a retired bookkeeper for Bortz Novelty Chocolate Company.  She was active in many organizations including the West Reading Women’s Club, JC Wives, Mt. Penn Senior Citizens, Berks County Senior Citizens Group, Christian Woman’s Organization, and West Reading Recreation Association where she served as past Secretary.  As a young mother, Betty was chosen as Mrs. Central Pennsylvania.  She was a member of St. James Church in West Reading where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir for over 50 years and served on the Stewardship Committee.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Gerald E. White; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John M. Graham of Irmo, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Kitty White of Inman, SC; grandchildren; Nichole A. Lowder, Coty M. Campbell, Chris White, and Lisa Baker; and five great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a brother, Lloyd R. Burkey, Jr.

Funeral services was held at 10:00 AM Friday at the Living Word Chapel by the Rev. Christine CR Parham at the Heritage at Lowman, White Rock, SC.  Interment was at 2:00 PM Friday at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
