Heyward L. Frick
January 27, 2005

Heyward L. Frick, 80, of 214 Lovelace Circle, Prosperity, husband of Rosalyn Hawkins Frick, died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Frick was born on February 8, 1924 in Chapin, a son of the late John G. and Annie Wessinger Frick.
Mr. Frick was an Army veteran of War World II. He was a member of Mr. Pilgrim Lutheran Church and served on the congregational council in his earlier years. Mr. Frick retired from Cannon Construction Company.
Mr. Frick is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Susan Bishop of Newberry and Julie Creel of Chapin; two sisters, Evelyn Elbert of Ohio and Mary Frances Aull of Pomaria; a brother, Claude L. Frick; five garndchildren, Sarah Bishop, Joseph S. Bishop, Benjamn Bishop, Santana Creel, and Taylor Creel; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, L. G. Frick and Oscar Frick.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church by the Rev. Elford Roof. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family was at the residence, 214 Lovelace Circle, Prosperity.

Otis W. Puckett
Jan. 26, 2005

Otis W. Puckett, 80, of 2018 Highway 66, Whitmire, husband of Dot Gilliam Puckett died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg.
Mr. Puckett was born on May 12, 1924 in Laurens County, a son of the late G.R. “Russ” and Florence Brown Puckett. He retired from Carlisle Finishing Co He was a member of Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church and the American Legion Post #70.
Mr. Puckett is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda P. and J. Marsh Temple of Charleston; a grandson, Jason Temple of Whitmire; and a stepson, Joe Temple of Greenville.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Ray Massey, Rev. John Leopard, and Rev. Bill Yon. Interment was in Whitmire Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire.

Robert K. “Bob” Bishop
January 27, 2005

Robert K. “Bob” Bishop, 77, of 1121 Marion St., Newberry, died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Providence Hospital.
Mr. Bishop was born on January 19, 1928 in Newberry, a son of the late Bennett L. and Mamie Buzhardt Bishop. He was an Army veteran of WW II and the Korean War. He retired from Coburg Dairy after 32 years of service and was also employed by Senior Catering.
He was a member of Bush River Baptist Church, the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, and was a Trustee of the Reedy River Association.
Mr. Bishop was twice married, first to the late Caroline Bishop and second to Betty G.Traylor Bishop. Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry M. and Linda Traylor of Prosperity, Tim G. and Lisa Traylor of Pomaria and Chris and Kay Traylor of Newberry; a sister, Frances Woodruff of Goleta, California; a brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Frankie Bishop of Charlotte, NC; and six grandchildren, Sam Traylor, Stacey Traylor, Shannon Traylor, Jessica Traylor, Charlsy Traylor and Willie Traylor. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marguerite Parkman and Mamie Edgeworth and five brothers Joe Bishop, Coleman Bishop, Judson Bishop, Pete Bishop, David Bishop and Ben Bishop.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Bush River Baptist Church. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at the residence, 1121 Marion Street, Newberry, SC.

Frank Kelly Ballard
January 27, 2005

Frank Kelly Ballard, 85, of White Rock, widower of Juanita C. Ballard, died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at the Lowman Home.
Mr. Ballard was born on September 11, 1919 in Statesville, NC. He was a member of James Island Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the Church Choir. He was a Mason and a Shriner and also a member of the Elks Club, the Orangeburg Sportsman Club, the Exchange Club, and a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Orangeburg. He was the first Eagle Scout in Eastern North Carolina District of Tarboro. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from the Department of Public Utilities, City of Orangeburg.
Mr. Ballard is survived by his daughter, Nancy Ballard Livingston of Chapin; his son Frank Kelly Ballard, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; a sister Leila Mae Miller; brother James Ballard; his granddaughter, Adriane Culler Livingston of Columbia and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial funeral services were held Saturday, at 11:00 am at Faith Presbyterian Church in Ballentine, SC and on Sunday, at 2:00 P.M. at James Island Presbyterian Church, Folly Road, Charleston, SC.

C. A. Dufford, Jr., M.D.
January 24, 2005

C. A. Dufford, Jr., M.D., 83, of Springfield Place, Newberry died Monday, January 24, 2005, at his residence.
Dr. Dufford was born July 10, 1921 in Kingstree, South Carolina, a son of the late C. A. Dufford, Sr. and Alma Cole Dufford.
He was a 1942 graduate of Newberry College and entered the US Army. Under an Army program he received his medical degree with a specialization in pediatrics from The Medical College of South Carolina in 1945. After serving in his medical capacity in the army in Japan, he returned to complete a medical residency in Newark, New Jersey and the old Columbia Hospital. Dr. Dufford began his practice in pediatrics in Newberry in 1950 and practiced until January 1997.
In 2003 The Dufford Playground, located on the front lawn of Newberry County Memorial Hospital, was dedicated in honor of the “Baby Doctor” and his 50 years of service to the community’s children. “I’m the only person I know who got paid to play. I love those kids,” Dufford once said.
Dr. Dufford was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry, The Newberry County Medical Society and The Country Club of Newberry.
A life-long supporter and friend of Newberry College, Dr. Dufford served as a member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees for 23 years from 1954 until 1977. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree in 1998 from his alma mater. Dr. Dufford was also active in athletics at Newberry College, where he helped establish the Indian Club and served as team physician from 1954 until 1998. In his honor, his friends established the C. A. Dufford, Jr. athletic scholarship in 1995. In July 1995 the Dufford siblings (Dr. C. A. Dufford, Jr., Virginia Dufford, Doris Dufford and Dr. W. E. [Bill] Dufford) donated their family home to the College.
Dr. Dufford is survived by his sister Doris Dufford of Newberry and a brother Dr. William E. (Bill) Dufford of Columbia. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Dufford.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 25 at the Dufford Alumni House, Newberry College Campus, from 5:30 until 7:30 pm.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 26 at A. G. D. Wiles Chapel on the Newberry College campus by the Reverend Steve Counts, pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry, and the Reverend Dr. Beverly Aurand, Newberry College pastor. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Newberry College Endowment Fund, 2100 College St. Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Danny Brabham, Jerry Chitty, Dr. Elmer Long, Tyler Dufford, Neil Dufford and William Cole. Honorary pallbearers were The Newberry County Medical Society.

Mary Helen Smith Hite

Mary Helen Smith Hite, 76, of 1510 Glenn Street, Newberry, widow of Wilmer M. Hite, died Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Hite was born on September 8, 1928 in Newberry, a daughter of the late William A. “Bill” Smith, Sr. and Louise Kunkle Smith. She was a member of Colony Lutheran Church and a member of W.E.L.C.A. She was a sales clerk for the Fashion and the Bergen’s Ladies Shop, a volunteer for the Manna House and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #24.
Mrs. Hite is a survived by a daughter and son-n-law, Karen H. and Mike Orloff of Simi Valley, CA; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sharon Hite of Mebane, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, William A. Smith, Jr. and Bobbie Smith of Newberry; five grandchildren, Thomas Hite, Travis Orloff, Ben Orloff, Matt Orloff, and Sarah Orloff..
Graveside Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jerry Trantham.
The family did receive friends at the residence, 1510 Glenn Street, Newberry.

Lewis N. Boozer

Lewis N. Boozer, 74, of 2526 Fair Ave., Newberry, died Monday, January 10, 2005.
Mr. Boozer was born on October 19, 1930 in Prosperity, a son of the late Mark N. and Mae Lee Shealy Boozer. He served in the US Army for two years, the National Guards for 19 years, and was retired from Oakland Mills, Kendall Co. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. He was twice married, first to the late Evelyn R. Boozer, and second to Buler Mae H. Boozer of Winnsboro.
Mr. Boozer is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Wendy F. Boozer of Newberry; three sisters, Dorothy B. Jones of Newberry, Fran B. Merchant of Prosperity, and Ann B. Dawson of Columbia; a brother, Ronald Boozer of Prosperity; and a grandson, James Arrowood of Newberry.
Graveside service were conducted Thursday at 2:00 P. M. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery by the Rev. Arden Hallman.
Visitation were from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Helen Clary Smith

Helen Clary Smith, 102, of 3903 Bush River Road, Kinards, widow of John Earle Smith, Sr., died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the family home.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 23, 1902 in Newberry County, the daughter of the late John Vernon and Jessie Boozer Clary. She was a member of the Bush River Baptist Church, of the choir, the teacher of the Martha Franks Sunday School Class for over 50 years, and she was active in Women’s Missionary Union on the state, regional, and local levels. She was a 1922 graduate of Erskine College, a member of the Bush River Friendship Club, the Nosegay Garden Club, and the Newberry-Saluda, South Carolina, and American Red Rose Societies. She was also a substitute teacher at Bush River High School from the time it opened to the time it closed.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Earle and Dannette W. Smith of Kinards; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law William Bryan and Donna W. Smith of Kinards; and a great grandson Drew William Smith of Kinards. She was predeceased by a daughter, Josephine Smith and a grandson Steven Earle Smith.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P. M. Tuesday at the Bush River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Mosteller. Interment was in the church cemetery.
The family was at the residence and did receive friends both there and after the funeral.
Active pallbearers were Boyd Smith, Tom Riser, Lee Walsh, William Young, William Satterwhite, Wayne Satterwhite, Randalph Johnson, and David Welch.
Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Martha Franks Sunday School Class and the Woman’s Missionary Union.

Virgil L. Boland

Virgil L. Boland, 85, of 3303 Wheeland Road, Little Mountain, widower of Frances Graham Boland, died Sunday, January 09, 2005 at Providence Hospital.
Mr. Boland was born on September 12, 1919 in Little Mountain, a son of the late Dewitt C. and Eula Frick Boland. He was a Navy veteran of World II and he retired as a Plant Supervisor from South Carolina Electric & Gas Co, having 43 years of service. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Men’s Sunday School class, was a former vice-chairman of the Congregational Council and was a former member of the Lutheran Church Men and the Little Mountain Ruritan Club.
Mr. Boland is survived by a daughter, Judith B. Wessinger of Little Mountain; three sons, Leon F. Boland, Charles H. Boland and David I. Boland, all of Little Mountain; two sisters, Edith Bedenbaugh and Mary Ruth Long, both of Prosperity; brother, John D. Boland of Little Mountain; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Bonni B. Barnes, a sister, Rosalyn B. Fulmer and a brother, Everett Boland.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Guy Cruse. Interment was in church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin and the family was at the residence, 3303 Wheeland Road, Little Mountain.

Sadie Sease Setzler

Sadie Sease Setzler, 94, of 2116 Osborne Ave., Newberry, widow of Ralph Halfacre Setzler, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Setzler was born in Newberry County in the St. Philip’s community, a daughter of the late Luther Hampton, Sr. and Bittie Ruff Sease. She was a 1931 graduate of Newberry College. For many years she worked for the Main St. Florist and Jones Florist, and then she retired as a clerk at B. C. Moore’s.
Mrs. Setzler was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Cromer/Hipp Sunday School Class, and the Miriam Circle of The W.E.L.C.A.
Mrs. Setzler is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Setzler Monroe and Bill Monroe of Spartanburg; one sister, Julia Kate Sease of Newberry; three grandchildren, Billy Monroe of Scotland, AR, Betsy M. Antley of Barnwell; and Mary M. Glenn of Roebuck; six great grandchildren, Trey, Will and Dargan Antley and Zac, Steven, and Savanna Glenn; and three step-grandchildren, Shane, Stevie and Marvin Benton.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family was at the residence, 2116 Osborne Ave.,

William Houseal “Willie” Hawkins

William Houseal “Willie” Hawkins, 84, of 2706 Deloache Ave., Newberry, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at his residence.
Mr. Hawkins was born on Feb. 14, 1920 in Newberry County, a son of the late Bloomer P. and Mary Elizabeth Sligh Hawkins. He was a Army veteran of World War II, having served in Guadalcanal. He was the retired owner of H & H Machine Shop and he was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, bridge, gardening and walking.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife married for 58 years, Margaret Sligh Hawkins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn H. and Robert Partridge of Newberry; a sister, Elizabeth Shannon of Newberry, a brother, Bloomer “Jack” Hawkins of Newberry; two grandchildren, Leslie Claire Davis of Union and Christine Leah Davis of Newberry. He was predeceased by five sisters, Margaret H. Boozer, Lillie H. Waters, Sara H. Wessinger, Mary H. Sease, and Ruth H. Lominack and three brothers, George P. Hawkins, R. Dudley Hawkins and Carl W. Hawkins.
Funeral services were conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Miller. Interment was in the Springdale Section of Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family was at the residence,2706 Deloache Ave.
