Patricia R. Kennerley

Patricia R. Kennerley, 58, of 6163 US Highway 395, Newberry, SC 29108 died Wednesday, January 27, 2010.
She was born on December 8, 1951 in Newberry to the late J. Harold and Jeannette S. Ruff. Patricia was a nurse for the SC Department of Corrections.
Patricia is survived by her daughters, Heather Appleby of New Brunswick, Canada and Tammi Wess of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Kiersten, Brennan, Liam, Falon, and Morgan Appleby of New Brunswick, Cananda and Kurtis, Kamden, and Klayton Wess of Las Vegas, NV; a brother J. Harold Ruff, Jr. of Newberry; and sisters, Janet R. Paysinger of Newberry and Elizabeth R. Richburg of Lexington.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Sunday, January 31 at First Baptist Church of Prosperity, SC. The Rev. Dale Gooding will be presiding.
For memorial contributions, the family has designated that gifts should be given on behalf of Kim Hibbard, a Bible translator with Bibles International. Checks may be written to First Baptist Church, PO Box 362, Prosperity, SC 29127, with a memo note stating “for Kim Hibbard.”

Cecil Eugene Merchant
January 27, 2010

Cecil Eugene Merchant, Jr., 78, of 412 Green Street, Newberry, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at White Oak Manor.
He was born on January 2, 1932 in Newberry to the late Cecil E. Merchant, Sr. and Mattie Longshore Merchant. On February 26, 1955, he married the late Mary Bartley.
Mr. Merchant was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Thomas and Howard Company. He was a lifetime member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church where he had previously served as chairman of the Congregational Council. He was a member and past president of the Newberry Exchange Club and the Elloree Hunting Club. He was also a member of the Prosperity Wildlife Federation and the West End Cemetery Committee and a charter member of the Smilin Swingers Square Dance Club.
Mr. Merchant is survived by his children, Bart (Cindy) Merchant of Newberry and Karen (Mike) Brehmer of Kinards; grandchildren, Nicole and Lucas Merchant of Irmo and Neal, Lance, and Marylee Brehmer of Kinards; brothers, Earle Merchant of Prosperity and Hugh Merchant of Newberry.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Merchant.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 PM Friday at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Mary Havens and the Rev. Floyd Sides.
Interment was in West End Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, 1307 Drayton St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Pallbearers were Jeffrey Bartley, Keith Bartley, Mac Bartley, Robert Bartley, Tee Bartley, Benny Bartley, Doug Merchant, Jimmy Merchant, and Hank Merchant.
Honorary pallbearers were Casper and Frances Berry and members of the Elloree Hunting Club and the Newberry Exchange Club.

Charles Emerson Ragland
January 23, 2010

Charles Emerson Ragland, age 92, recently of Hopkins, died January 23, 2010
at the Brian Center St. Andrews in Columbia.
Mr. Ragland, son of the late Rev. Samuel Emerson and Lillian Harlow Ragland, was a native of Bowling Green, KY. He graduated from Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1937 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1942.
He served as a Signal Corps officer in North Africa and Sicily during World War II and at other postings in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica before returning to civilian life.
While on leave visiting relatives in Newberry in 1944, Charles met his future wife Jane Harriet Summer, daughter of John H. and Mamie Swittenberg Summer. They were married a few months later. He was employed by radio station WKDK, the S.C. and U.S. Forestry Commissions, Carolina Electronics, Remington Rand Univac, and the Shakespeare plant of Anthony Enterprises and Glassmaster prior to retirement.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry, where he sang in the choir.
Mr. Ragland is survived by children Charles, Jr., of Selinsgrove, PA, John Harrison and Mary Helen Ragland of Piedmont, Kathryn R. and J. Allen Gilbert of Hopkins, Christopher and Julie Ragland of Fountain Inn, grandchildren Will Ragland, Rebecca Ragland, Marianne Gilbert Nicolau, David Gilbert, Harrison Gilbert, Benjamin Ragland, Susannah Ragland, and Christian Ragland; and one great-grandson, Parker L. Nicolau. A brother, William C. Ragland of Pittsboro, NC and a sister, Lillian R. Caudill, of Louisville, KY, also survive. Charles' wife Jane passed away in 2008.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Caldwell Day. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Rev. Paul B. Cobb
January 21, 2010

Reverend Paul B. Cobb, 87, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on January 21, 2010 at The Cypress. He was born on September 22, 1922 in Greensboro, NC, a son of the late A.C. and Hyacinth Mangum Cobb.
He was a graduate of Duke University, A.B. Degree, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, M. Div. Degree, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, M.Ed. Degree. His ordination took place on October 7, 1945 by the United Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina, at Union Lutheran Church, Salisbury, NC.
Parishes served by Reverend Cobb were; Calvary Lutheran Church, Concord, NC 1945-49, Alamance Lutheran Church, Alamance, NC 1949-53, Ascension Lutheran Church, Shelby, NC 1953-60, Woman's Memorial Lutheran Church, Pulaski, VA 1960-64 and St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Charlotte, NC 1964-84. A retired pastor since 1984, he served part-time on the staff at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Charlotte; and provided assistance to various Mecklenburg County Lutheran churches as needed.
He was a board member of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and the Home Mission Committee Synod.
Reverend Cobb had been a member of Kiwanis International since 1945, and a ten year member of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. He served on the Executive Board of the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society, as well as on the Advisory Council of the Adult Rehabilitation Center operated by the Salvation Army in Charlotte.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Louise Bowers Cobb, daughter, Ellen Cobb Yates and husband, John C. Yates, and grandson, John Paul Yates. His daughter, Rosalyn Cobb preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010 at St. Marks's Lutheran Church with the Reverend Peter Brown and the Reverend Bradley Schmeling, officiating. The family did receive friends following the service in the Gathering Place at St. Mark's. Interment did take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC.

Josephine "Jo" Harris Layton

Josephine “Jo” Addison Harris Layton, 90, of Springfield Place and formerly of Jessica Avenue, Newberry died Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Layton was born in Laurens County on July 17, 1919 a daughter of the late Richard Gray and Erin Addison Harris. She was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the Women’s College of Furman University and taught for many years in the public schools of Newberry County.
She was an involved member of O’Neal Street United Methodist Church, where she served as a church school teacher, lay delegate, and Chairperson of the Administrative Council. She was active district-wide in the U.M.W. serving as both an officer and member. Mrs. Layton was a Past President and member of the Newberry County Retired Teachers Association and a Board Member of the South Carolina Retired Teachers Association. She was an officer and a member of the Fidelis Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and was a member of the Newberry Literary Study Club. Mrs. Layton assisted with the publication of the Newberry County Family History book and enjoyed many other community and civic activities.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Linda Harris Brown (Ted Raymond) Fansher of Spartanburg, Susan Harris Grady of Greenville, Nancy Harris (Dr. Edward Morris) Abrams of Myrtle Beach; Neal (Floride) Dickert of Augusta, David (Barbara) Dickert of Eureka, MO, Barbara (Dalton) Parker of Columbia, Nan (Larry) Bridgers of Clinton, Charlie (Kathy) Layton of Lakeland, FL, Steve (Tammy)Layton of Gulf Breeze, FL, Sue Layton Davenport of Newberry, and Michael (Debby) Layton of Chester; a sister-in-law, Mary Layton Dickert of Newberry; and a niece-in-law, Mary Ellen Layton of Newberry. She was predeceased by her husband, Olin Carlisle Layton; brother, William Pinckney Harris; sister, Weeta Margaret Harris; sister-in-law, Emma Heriot Harris; nephews, Charles Layton and Tom Layton; and two nephews-in-law, Earl Brown and Jack Grady.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M., prior to the service, at Whitaker Funeral Home.

The family deeply appreciates the love and care shown by her sitters and would like to thank Patricia Kelly, Rebecca Cram, and Dana Williams who were so good to Jo.

Julian B. Addy
January 11, 2010

Julian B. Addy, 90, died peacefully on January 11, 2010. Born October 29, 1919, in Lexington, South Carolina, he was the son of James B. and Martha H. Addy.
He was a lifelong member of St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church; served on the council, taught sunday school and sang in the choir. Julian attended Chapin High School and continued his education by earning his BS at Newberry College and his Masters at USC. He influenced many young people as he coached, taught and later became school principal. Julian ended his career in administration as the assistant superintendent of Lexington County School District 5.
Julian was an avid gardener, sports enthusiast, and a passionate Clemson Tiger fan. Among his many achievements: He was a charter member of the Chapin Ruritan Club, was presented with Ruritan Forever Membership, and received the Chapin Mankind Award. He also served in the US Army/Air force as a flight officer during WWll.
Julian was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters; son Jerry B. Addy and grandson Reid A. Addy.
He is survived by his wife, Lula N. Addy, of 64 years; two sons, Gene W. Addy and his wife Donna of Rockford, Illinois, and Glenn R. Addy of Surry, Virginia and daughter Donna A. Pittman and her husband Dickie of Surry, VA; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Visitation were held at St. Jacobs’s fellowship hall on Sunday January 17, starting at 1:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 2:30 PM in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to your charity of choice.

Alice Danielsen Kinard
January 3, 2010

Alice Danielsen Kinard, age 79, and widow of Hubert Vernon Kinard, went to meet her Savior on January 3, 2010. Alice was born in Newberry to the late John T. Danielsen, Sr. and the late Mary Enlow Danielsen on June 16, 1930.
An honor graduate of Newberry High School, Mrs. Kinard was a summa cum laude graduate of Newberry College. She received both and MA and a MEd degree from Winthrop University. She has been listed in Who’s Who Among American Women and Who’s Who Among American Educators. Mrs. Kinard taught at Newberry Middle School and Newberry High School. From time to time, she also taught at Newberry College, Piedmont Technical College, and as a substitute in Newberry County.
Early in life, Alice dedicated her life to Jesus Christ. She served Him in the three areas of her life that brought her much love, joy and happiness; her churches, her family, and her students.
She is survived by her two sons, Daniel H. Kinard of Lexington and John L. (Zeolean Frick) Kinard of Greenwood; six grandchildren, Chris Kinard, Mary Elizabeth Kinard, Hunter Kinard, Vernon Kinard, Abby Kinard, and Gretchen Kinard; and a large number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, J.T, Jr. and Heyward Danielsen, and three sisters, Christina Danielsen, Louise D. Senn, and Blanche D. Kalloff.
Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Caldwell Day and the Reverend Floyd Sides did conduct the service. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family did receive friends 9:30 to 10:30 AM, prior to the service, at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
Pallbearers were Chris Kinard, Vernon Kinard, Alan Paysinger, Norris Long, P.K. Fuller, Mike Hipp, Clarence Shealy, Jr., Bill Floyd, Sam Baird, and Bill Harvey.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fesperman Sunday School Class of Redeemer and Women of the ELCA Circles.
