Strategoula E. Galanis
November 26, 2004

Strategoula E. Galanis, 90, of 2518 Henry Ave., Newberry, widow of George Galanis, died Friday, November 26, 2004 at Jesse Frank Hawkins Health Care.
Mrs. Galanis was born on Feb. 22, 1914 in Vassara, Laconia, Greece the daughter of the late Konstandino and Eleni Karragianni Economoupoulos. She was a member of St. George Orthodox Church in Vassara.
Mrs. Galanis is survived by a daughter, Litsa Economos of Newberry; two sons, Denis Galanis of Long Island, NY and Kosta Galanis of Manhattan, NY; two grandchildren, Toula Economos Hubbard of Columbia and George Galanis of New York; and a great grandson, Christopher Hubbard of Columbia.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Father Aris Metrakos. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home. The family was at the residence 2518 Henry Ave.

Grace Banks Ruff
November 24, 2004

Grace Banks Ruff, 95, of 1807 Ebenezer Rd., Newberry, widow of L.W. Ruff, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Ruff was born on February 14, 1909 in Saluda County, the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Elizabeth Rogers Banks. She was a retired employee of Kendall Co., Mollohon Plant and was a member of Glenn St. Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ruff is survived by a daughter, Frances R. Mack of Newberry; two sons and daughters-in-law, S. J. and Grace A. Ruff and Mitchell and Peggy Ruff all of Newberry; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Glenn St. Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Kirkland and the Rev. Donald West. Interment was in the Newberry Memorial Gardens
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:00 P. M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence, 1807 Ebenezer Road, Newberry.

Evelyn Sease Boozer
November 13, 2004

Evelyn Sease Boozer 85, of Springfield Place, Newberry, widow of R. Granville Boozer died Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Boozer was born on November 24, 1918 in Newberry County, the daughter of the late Jacob E. and Lee Ora Lominack Sease. She was a member of Newberry A. R. Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Boozer is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth G. and Karen T. Boozer of Anderson; a sister, Margaret Hanna of Newberry; and two grandchildren Hope Boozer of Lawrenceville, GA and Chris Driggers of Norfolk, VA. She was predeceased by a daughter Pamela Driggers,a sister, Edna Sharp, three brothers, Robert Sease, Heyward Sease and Ellebre Sease.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony Locke. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

James F. (Jim) Kyzer
November 11, 2004

James F. (Jim) Kyzer of Columbia died Thursday, November 11, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Kyzer was born in Newberry County, the son of the late Furman G. and Evelyn Dominick Kyzer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a retired employee of Springs Industries and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Kyzer is survived by his wife, Julia Pugh Kyzer of Columbia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tanya K. and Brian D. Williams of Inman and Trina K. and Larry C. Poston, Jr. of Columbia; and four grandchildren, Zachary, Andrew, Matthew, and Daniel Poston.
Memorial funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Head and the Rev. Pat Griffin. The family did receive friends following the services in the Gathering Room at the church. At the request of the family, entombment services will be private.

Leon M. Shealy
November 10, 2004

Leon M. Shealy, 83, formerly of 206 Elm Street, Prosperity, widower of Frances Counts Shealy, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Lowman Home.
Mr. Shealy was born on May 5, 1921 in Little Mountain, a son of the late L. Magnus and Mary Stoudemire Shealy. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a retired employee of South Carolina Electric & Gas. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was a former member of the Congregational Council, a member and former teacher of the Happy Hearts Sunday School Class, a member and former treasurer of the Leisure Group, and a member of Lutheran Men. He was a former member of the Prosperity Town Council and a former member of the Prosperity Civitan Club.
Mr. Shealy is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law; Phyllis S. and Bill Barnette of Aiken, Marysue S. and Eddie Rivers of Prosperity, Marella S. and Fred Reid of Anderson; a sister, Marjorie Wicker of Little Mountain; and eight grandchildren; Laura B. Jackson, Keri B. Bukovitz, Chris Barnette, Suzanne R. Medlock, Katie Reid, Claire Reid, Hunter Reid, and Todd Reid; and one great grandson, Bryce Medlock. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert D. Shealy and a sister, Evelyn Wicker.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2:00 P. M. at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Azilee Satterwhite McLeod

Azilee Satterwhite McLeod, 95 of White Oak Manor, formerly of 1754 Bush River Road, Newberry, widow of John Robert “Bob” McLeod, died Monday, November 8, 2004.
Mrs. McLeod was born in Newberry County on August 6, 1909, the daughter of the late Frank M. and Estelle Teague Satterwhite. She was a very active member of the Bush River Baptist Church, the Martha Franks Sunday School Class, W. M.U, and the Newberry County Home Demonstration Club.
Mrs. McLeod is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, John Robert and Phoebe McLeod of West Columbia and James C. and Kitty McLeod, and Edward and Sadie McLeod, all of Newberry; a brother, Earl Satterwhite of Newberry; seven grandchildren, Bobby McLeod, Sandra Schrank, Deborah Massingale, Nancy Key, Bryan McLeod, and Beverly McLeod, and Eddie McLeod; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers Claude Satterwhite and Haynard Satterwhite.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday at the Bush River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Mosteller, the Rev. Thomas Morrow and the Rev. Todd Kirkland. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McLeod, 5184 Bush River Road, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were Wayne Satterwhite, William Satterwhite, Bryan McLeod, Bobby McLeod, Steve Massingale, and Jerry Satterwhite, Daren Millstead, and Larry Millstead, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Martha Franks Sunday School Class.

Elizabeth Renwick Baker
November 3, 2004

Elizabeth Renwick Baker, 82, of 1905 Main Street, Newberry, widow of Ralph Parr Baker, M. D., died Wednesday, November 3, 2004.
Mrs. Baker was born in Newberry on June 26, 1922. She was the daughter of the late John Erwin and Frances Caldwell Renwick. Mrs. Baker graduated from Newberry College, summa cum laude in 1943. She was a homemaker and active in numerous organizations in the Newberry community. She was past president of the S.C. Medical Alliance, past president of the Newberry Medical Auxiliary, a charter member and first treasurer of the Newberry Historical Society, past president of the Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, past chaplain of the Jasper chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 24, a member of the Newberry Fine Arts Club, a 40 year Rotary Club spouse, and a member of the Duke University Medical School Davison Club.
Mrs. Baker was an active member of the Newberry ARP Church, having served on numerous committees and was the former president of the Women of the Church. She was a long time secretary for Circle #1, and past teacher of the Elizabeth Shealy Fellowship Sabbath Sunday school class.
Elizabeth was an avid gardener and enthusiastic photographer. She loved history and researching family genealogy.
Mrs. Baker is survived by five children, Elizabeth R. Baker, M. D. of Columbia, Mary E. Baker, M. D. of Mt. Pleasant, Ralph P. Baker, Jr., M. D. and wife, Susan, of Chapin, Erwin R. Baker, D. M. D. and wife, Sally, of Chapin, and Catherine B. Carlson and husband, David, of Newberry; grandchildren, Mary Beth Carlson, Susie Baker, William Baker, Ralph Baker, Rebecca Carlson, Christian Baker, Russell Baker, Virginia Baker, and Thomas Carlson; a sister, Catherine R. Hardwick and husband, Dayton of Bedford, New Hampshire; and first cousin, Frances R. Counts and husband, Ed, of Prosperity.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Newberry ARP Church by the Rev. Dr. Tim Erskine and Rev. Tony Locke. Interment were in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family did receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the home, 1905 Main Street, Newberry.

Robert L. "Bob" Bowers
November 1, 2004

Robert L. “Bob” Bowers, 80, of 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity died Monday, November 1, 2004 at Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Bowers was born December 30, 1923 in Prosperity, the son of the late Brabham E. and Julia Shealy Bowers. He was a graduate of Little Mountain High School, and was a US Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church, a former church trustee and was a retired carpenter.
Mr. Bowers is survived his wife, Voris Wright Bowers of the home, two daughters Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; four sisters, Mary Lizzie Boland, Mildred Hentz, and Kathryn Wicker, all of Little Mountain and Betty B. Haltiwanger of Newberry; two grandchildren, Terry A. Morris and Randal S. Abrams, Jr.; three great grandchildren, Michael Morris, Elijah Abrams, and Olivia Abrams.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, at Wightman United Methodist Church by Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment was in the Newberry Memorial Gardens

Gerald David Koon

Gerald David Koon, 62, of 303 Loop Road, Little Mountain, died Monday, November 1, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Koon was born in Newberry County, a son of Earnestine McCartha Koon and the late John David Koon. He served his country in the US Army. He was a life long member of St. Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church, taught Sunday school for 20 years, a former congregational council member and former church treasurer. Mr. Koon retired from the Department of Transportation, having worked 3 years in Georgia and 31 years in South Carolina.
Mr. Koon is survived by his mother; his wife, Linda Epting Koon, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Lynn and Steven Ehney of Greenwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald David Koon, Jr. and Denise Koon of Little Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Barney R. and Joann Koon of Gaston; and three grandchildren, Jon-Drayton and Collin Ehney and Madelyn Koon.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at St Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church by the Rev. David Tholstrup. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. The family was at the residence, 303 Loop Road, Little Mountain.
