Lucia Hunter Spotts
November 30, 2005

Lucia Hunter Spotts, 90, of formerly 2401 Wilson Road, Newberry, widow of Fuller D. Spotts, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the home of her son.
Mrs. Spotts was born on June 19, 1915, in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Rufus B. and Annie Morris Hunter. She was a homemaker and former co-owner of Eagle Construction Company, a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, life member of the W. E. L. C. A., the Fifty Plus, a member of the Country Club of Newberry and a former member of the Marion Davis Mothers’ Club.
Mrs. Spotts is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Bob Mathews of Conover, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip M. and Kathy Spotts of Newberry; eight grandchildren, Cathy Spotts Hamilton of Knoxville, TN, Jeff Spotts of Chapin, Jill Spotts of Greer, Paige Mathews Woodward and husband, Greg M. Woodward of Greensboro, NC, Bart Mathews and wife Patti Feeny Mathews of Lilburn, GA, Chad Mathews of Lilburn, GA, Hunter Spotts and wife, Wendy Pieffer of Baltimore, MD Langston Spotts and wife, Christie of Irmo; four great grandsons; three step-grandchildren, Kelley Pfeffer of Ashburn, VA, Kenley Loftis of Irmo, and Kathryn Hampton of Columbia; and five step-great-grandsons. She was predeceased by a son, Al Spotts, and six brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Steve Counts. Interment was in the Rosemont Cemetery, Springdale Section.
Visitation was Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip M. Spotts, 8660 SC Hwy 395, Newberry.

Chesley H. “C. H.” Minick, Jr
November 27, 2005

Chesley H. “C. H.” Minick, Jr, 87, of 269 Minick Rd, Newberry, died Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Minick was born on December 11, 1917 in Newberry County. He was a son of the late Chesley H. and Nancy Morris Minick. He was a retired employee of the Kendall Company, Oakland Plant and was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
Mr. Minick was twice married, first to the late Edna Morris Minick and second to the late Sadie Hawkins Minick.
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cheryl and Wilbert Lucas of Newberry, Joyce and Gerald Cockrell of Saluda and Carolyn Shealy of Prosperity; three sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Kathy Minick, Chesley and Robyn Minick and Gordon and Carolyn Minick all of Newberry; four stepdaughters; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son-in-law Larry C. Shealy, four sisters, Sallie Perdue, Mallie Ringer, Dolly Minick and Juanita Ruff; four brothers, Gary Minick, Legrande Minick, John Minick and George "Little Jack" Minick; and a stepson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Art Hallman. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation was from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family was at his residence, 269 Minick Road, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: Bert Lucas, Joe Minick, Dean Minick, Kevin Minick, Keith Minick, Kyle Minick and Clint Shealy.

Flavel Scott (Scottie) Elliott, Jr.
November 26, 2005

Flavel Scott (Scottie) Elliott, Jr., 71, of Newberry, died Saturday, November 26, 2005 at Newberry Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Miller with visitation prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. in the Henry Hall of the Church. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry.
Mr. Elliott was born October 1, 1934 in Asheville, North Carolina, son of the late Dr. Flavel Scott Elliott and the late Rosalie Conn Elliott. Scottie moved to Newberry at age 12 and was a graduate of Newberry High School. He grew to become one of Newberry’s best-known citizens. He was a life-long member of Central United Methodist Church, the Chesley Cannon Men’s Sunday School class, and United Methodist Men. He served as an usher and in recent years Scottie was very proud to be responsible for opening and securing the Church buildings for services. He was a loyal Church member and participated in many Church Activities.
Scottie was an avid sports fan and attended virtually every Newberry High and Newberry College sports event to cheer for his teams. He traveled with the teams and was recognized by both schools for his loyal support as the number one fan. In addition to being a fixture at most games, he was a life member of the Newberry High School Bulldog Booster Club and the Newberry College Indian Club. He played city and church league softball for years and followed all sports intently. He was known for his evening calls to friends offering a play-by-play description of the most recent sporting event.
Scottie served his community as a member of the Newberry Civitan Club, which had honored him as Civitan of the year. He also served as Assistant Sergeant at Arms of the South Carolina Civitan organization. He loved to attend the annual Civitan conventions where he was welcomed by many friends. Special appreciation is owed to Bryan Bobo and Jim Seeley who assisted Scottie in travel to many of these meetings.
He was a charter member of the Newberry Historical Society and a life member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Scottie was a loyal friend who always took time to phone his friends nightly to say hello and offer a sports report or a reminder of some future event.
He is survived by extended family and by many friends who will miss his nightly calls but will remember them as constant gestures of his love and concern.
Scottie’s friends wish to express much gratitude to the staff and doctors of Newberry Memorial Hospital for their sincere compassion and excellent care during his illness.
Active pallbearers were John Paul Whitaker, Jackie Swindler, Tony Powell, John Rucker, Tim Medlin, Tommy Johnson, Bill Harvey, Bubba Griffith, and Lee Foster.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Chesley Cannon Men’s Bible Class, United Methodist Men, and Ushers of Central United Methodist Church.

Robert L. Koon
November 25, 2005

Robert L. Koon, 60, of 641 Clipper Trail, Chapin, SC died Friday, November 25, 2005 at the Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Koon was born on March 25, 1945 in Chapin, a son of the late Claude C. and Nellie McCartha Koon. He attended the Newberry Church of God.
Mr. Koon survived by his wife, Trudy A. Koon; four daughters, Hope Wilson of Newberry, Robbie Harris of Prosperity, Cindy Nichols of Williston, and Diane Koon of Newberry; one son, Tony Koon of Dallas, TX; one sister, Frances Riddle of Little Mountain; one brother, Carroll C. Koon of Newberry; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Jewel Koon.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Newberry Church of God by the Rev. Daniel Nash. Interment was in Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church Cemetery
The family did receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of his daughter, Robbie Harris, 465 Long Road, Prosperity.

Max Sam Cook
November 24, 2005

Max Sam Cook, 82, of 1089 Bachman Chapel Road, Prosperity, died Thursday, November 24, 2005 at the Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Cook was born on October 9, 1923 in Prosperity, a son of the late Sam A. and Eunice Halfacre Cook. He was a Navy veteran of WW II having served in the Pacific Theater on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-LA. He was the President of Dormax Farms and was a former partner in Cook Brothers.
Mr. Cook was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men, the Intercessory Prayer Group, the VFW, American Legion Post 24, USS Shangri-La Reunion Association, and the Lower Newberry County Farmers Association.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy DuBose Cook; three daughters, Maxine C. Bailey of Irmo, Shirley C. Weaver of Mt. Pleasant, and Marsha C. Price of Irmo; three sisters and a brother–in-law, Christine C. Hutchinson and Anne C. Graham both of Newberry and Caroline C. and Buck Cockrell of Prosperity; a sister-in-law, Peggy B. Cook of Prosperity; six grandchildren, Alex Bailey, Chris Bailey, Mamie Rand, Meredith Hulen, John Weaver, and Ryan Price; and 10 great grandchildren, Maxwell Bailey, Jared Bailey, Rachel Bailey, Miles Bailey, Kelsey Rand, Shelby Rand, Nate Rand, Chrisman Rand, Max Hulen, and DuBose Hulen. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Cook.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor.
Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence, 1089 Bachman Chapel Road, Prosperity.

Merron Smith Hentz

Merron Smith Hentz, 67, formerly of 283 Koon Trestle Road, Pomaria, widow of Robert L. Hentz, Sr., died Monday November 14, 2005 at J.F. Hawkins Health Care.
Mrs. Hentz was born on February 12, 1938 in Laurens County, a daughter of the late C. Clitus and Onie Harrison Smith. She was a retired employee of Whitten Center and a member of Pomaria Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Hentz is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Todd Fulmer of Prosperity; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert “Robbie” L. Hentz, Jr. and Darryl S. and Betsy Hentz all of Pomaria; three sisters, Elvira Tiensivu of Pomaria, Ada Meneatrice Beavers of Mesa, AZ, and Maledia Cole of Denver, NC; one brother, Charlie Smith of Clinton; six grandchildren, Derek Fulmer, Elena Fulmer, Nicholas Hentz, Courtney Hentz, Zachary Hentz, and Sarah Hentz.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Pomaria Lutheran Church by the Vicar Stacy Loizeaux and the Rev. Terry Amick. Interment was in the Pomaria Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Darryl Hentz, 112 Folk St., Pomaria.

Alma Lee Emery
November 11, 2005

Alma Lee Emery, 88, of 824 Spool Wheel Road, Gilbert, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at Lexington Medical Center.
Mrs. Emery was born on March 31, 1917 in Oviedo, FL, a daughter of the late James H. and Willa Donaldson Lee. She was raised by her great grandmother, Susanna. She finished school in Miami, Fl and went to work in a cigar factory in FL. In 1938, she and her late husband Edward R. Emery of 63 years were married and moved to Dublin, GA where she still has many close friends and family. In 1967, they moved to Lexington, SC where she continued raising her family. She spent many years working at Session’s, a family owned department store in Lexington. She retired in the mid 1980’s. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lexington
Mrs. Emery is survived by her beloved son and daughter-in-law; Edward C. and Cheryl J. Emery of Gilbert; four grandchildren and spouses; Mary Grace E. (Simeon) Bryant of Gilbert, Jacki E.(Danny) Clark of Connelly Springs, NC, Jesse “Jay” E. Emery of Gilbert, and Susanna E. (Matthew) Fomby presently stationed in the military in Cairo, Egypt; and her greatest pride her seven great grandchildren; Jillian and Andrew Bryant of Lexington, Melinda, Katherine, and Jennifer Clark of Connelly Springs, NC, and McKenzie and Nikolas Fomby of Cairo, Egypt. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Lee and George Lee.
She was a sweet grandmother and her grandchildren could fill the newspaper with the wonderful memories of their grandmother. She was an excellent cook, had a great sense of humor, and loved fishing. She was dearly loved by all that met her and will be greatly missed by all that loved her.
Graveside funeral services were at 2:00 P.M. Sunday in Woodridge Cemetery.

O. L. Cook, Jr., 84, formerly of 409 Crosson St. Newberry, died Thursday November 10, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mr. Cook was born on August 25,1921 in Newberry, a son of the late Osborne Luther Cook, Sr. and Bertha Hiller Cook. He was Army veteran World War II and was a retired office manager of Thomas and Howard Company. He was a member of the Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and The Lutheran Men in Mission for many years.
Mr. Cook is survived by a sister, Vera C. Creekmore of Newberry; and nieces and nephews, Judy Clark of Lake City, Susan Black, Marty Cook, Robbie Hunter, and Kenny Cook all of Newberry and Craig Cook of Spain. He was predeceased by a sister, Gertie Lee Rogers and brothers, Harold Cook, Fred Cook and Kenneth Cook.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Bob Kasting. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:00 P. M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hunter, 2263 Trinity Church Road, Newberry.
Memorial may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, 1307 Drayton Street, Newberry, S.C. 29108.

Colie Evans Bobb, 94, formerly of Smith Road, Apt B-4, Newberry, widow of Roland A. Bobb, died Monday, November 7, 2005 at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mrs. Bobb was born on December 7, 1910 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Gregg Evans and Lula Belle Evans Eddy. She was a retired employee of Newberry Mills and was a member of West End Baptist Church, the T.E.L. Sunday School Class and Women’s Missionary Circle.
Mrs. Bobb is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick A. and Judy F. Bobb of Prosperity; two grandchildren and spouse Cindy and Kim Moore of Newberry and Roland A. Bobb of Atlanta; and three great grandchildren, James Moore, Benjamin Moore and Kimberly Moore and her fiance’, Teddy Bonds all of Newberry. She was predeceased by a sister, Dovie Evans Hamm.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Larry Deeter and Rev. Eddie Bledsoe. Internment was in West End Cemetery.

Jessie Caroline Boozer Mayer, 91, formerly of 932 Spearman Road, Newberry, widow of Harry E. Mayer, Sr., died Monday, November 7, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Mayer was born on January 23, 1914, in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Horace Lee and Rebecca Harmon Boozer. She was a homemaker and a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church, the Women in the Church, and the Adult Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Mayer is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Elliott and Linda Mayer and Lee and Suzanne Mayer all of Newberry; a brother and sister-in-law, Horace L. “Pete” and Mazie Boozer of Newberry; four grandchildren, Guerry Mayer, Wanda Richardson, Leanne Waters, and Scott Mayer all of Newberry; and four great grandchildren, Nathan and Kaylee Mayer and Loren and Brett Waters. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Lee Boozer.
Funeral services were conducted t 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Smyrna Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Scott Hill. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Lillian Hendrix Bouknight

Lillian Hendrix Bouknight, 85, formerly of 1636 Green Tree Road, Newberry, widow of W. Carman Bouknight, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Bouknight was born on December 1, 1919 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Marcus Boyd and Eula Davenport Hendrix. Along with her husband, they owned and operated Royal Cleaners. She was a Life Member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Women’s Circle # 1. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School for a number of years.
Mrs. Bouknight is survived by a daughter, Sylvia B. Holmes of Newberry; a son and daughter-in-law, Melvin D. and Lillian M. Bouknight of Newberry; three sisters, Martha Bowers of Silverstreet, Betty Willingham of Newberry, and Fronie Chaney of Greenwood; two brothers, Harold Hendrix and Boyd Hendrix both of Newberry; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three sisters, Mae Wiehrs, Corinne Merritt, and Leora Walker and a brother, Clarence Dennis.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church by Rev Hugh Bickley and Rev. Allen Senn. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at 1636 Green Tree Road, Newberry.
