Rose F. Mazzanti
March 29, 2009

Rose F. Mazzanti, age 89, of Lake Village, Arkansas died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Chicot Memorial Hospital. She was born March 20, 1920, in Glen Allan, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Marino Favi and Pauline Mangialardi Favi and was a homemaker and communicant of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Mazzanti, and by a brother and 2 sisters. Survivors are 3 daughters, Libby Harris of Counce, Tennessee, Mary Tootie Mencer and husband, Olan, of Lake Village, Arkansas and Agnes Marie Routon and husband, George, of Newberry, South Carolina; 7 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was from 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, March 30, 2009, with Rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Bishop Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Father Theophilos Okpara as Celebrant. Burial did follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Home of Lake Village. Arkansas.
Pallbearers were Brad McLaurin, Donald McLaurin, Renhard McLaurin, Michael Mencer, David Mencer, Chris Hatch, Kevin Bramer, and Chris Routon.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the personnel at Lake Village Healtcare Nursing Home.

Virginia Bess Corley Renwick
March 28, 2009

Virginia Bess Corley Renwick, 87, of Newberry, died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Her husband, James S. Renwick, Jr. predeceased her.
Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late Homer Edward and Annie McCary Corley. She was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in Washington, D.C. as a stenographer from 1944-1946. Mrs. Renwick retired from the Kendall Company, Oakland plant, was a member of the Newberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and volunteered at Speers Street Elementary School for 25 years as a teacher helper.
Surviving are sons and their wives, James S. Renwick, III of Columbia, Stanley M. and Linda Cromley Renwick of Newberry, and George E. and LuAnne Richardson Renwick of Lexington; a daughter and her husband, Ann Renwick and Samuel M. Price, Jr. of Newberry; grandchildren and their spouses, April Renwick Grady and Will, Ginger Renwick George and John, J. McGill Price and Holly, Cpt. Samuel M. Price, III and Katie, and Renwick Meagan Price, two great-granddaughters, Savannah N. Grady, and Abigail McGill Price; a brother, Robert Joseph and Eleanor Lewis Corley of Spartanburg; and sisters, Mary Nell (Polly) Shealy of Columbia and Ethel Corley Mayer of Newberry. Mrs. Renwick was predeceased by siblings, James William Corley, Verdie Florence Wise, and Haskell Ellison (Hap) Corley.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Tony Locke. The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley M. Renwick, 134 Shady Lane and did receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Leila Virginia Castles Phillips
March 29, 2009

Leila Virginia (Castles) Phillips of Newberry, SC (94) entered into eternal rest Sunday at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Phillips was born Dec. 11, 1914 in Winnsboro, SC, daughter of Herbert Lee Castles and Nellie Marie (Watts) Castles. She was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Newberry, S.C. She worked for many years at Phillips Granite Co. in Rion, SC as a bookkeeper. After moving to Newberry, she and her husband, O.C. (Otis Cllifford) Phillips, Sr. (deceased) opened their business, Phillips Memorials. She continued this business into her later years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Newberry.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy Drayton Rutherford Chapter #152. She loved gardening and was a member of the Nosegay Garden Club and the Newberry Rose Society. She spent many happy hours working in her yard. She loved providing flowers for her church as well as to many friends and acquaintances. She was kind, considerate and thoughtful to everyone and never uttered an unkind word. She was true to God, her faith, and her beliefs, and instilled in her children these same values and principles.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel Lewis Castles and Henry Wadsworth Castles, and a granddaughter, Laura Jean Phillips. She is survived by her two sisters, Annie Elizabeth (Castles) Shull and Nellie Lee (Castles) Rutland. Her children are Pamelia Virginia (Phillips) Ivester (Roy Terry) of Seneca, S.C., Gail Castles (Phillips) Zidlick (Albert J. Jr.) of Mt Pleasant, S.C., and Otis Clifford Phillips, Jr. of Taylors S.C. Her grandchildren are Ashley Lynn Tewell, Cindy Marie Ivester, Karen Gail Zidlick, John Witherspoon Zidlick, Matthew Howell Zidlick and Michael Clifford Phillips, and three great-grandchildren, Adam Patrick Tewell, Lindsay Kate Tewell and Lela Gale Zidlick. She leaves behind many neices and nephews and special friends and caretakers Channie James of Newberry, S.C. and Betty Jo Taylor of Pendleton,S.C.
Funeral services were at First Baptist Church of Newberry on Caldwell St., Newberry, S.C. Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Burial services were at Greenbrier Church Cemetery on Greenbrier-Mossydale Road, Winnsboro, S.C.
Visitation were from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
Pallbearers were John Witherspoon Zidlick, Matthew Howell Zidlick, Michael Clifford Phillips, Roy Terry Ivester, Samuel Lewis Castles, Jr. and William Herbert Castles, Honorary pallbearer was Albert Joseph Zidlick, Jr.

Lewis F. "Uncle Lew" Dale
March 25, 2009

Lewis F. “Uncle Lew” Dale, 80, of 216 Abrams St. Silverstreet, died Wednesday, March 25 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on September 15, 1928 in Hagerstown, IN, to the late Frank E. Dale and Vivian “Mom” Dale Collins. Mr. Dale served his country in the United States Marine Corps retiring after twenty years of service. He was also retired from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department as Lieutenant and worked as Bailiff in the Newberry County Court House.
Mr. Dale was a member of the Silverstreet Ruritan Club and a volunteer member of the Silverstreet Fire Department. He was a member of Amity Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites, Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Newberry County Shrine Club. He was a very active member of Silverstreet Lutheran Church where he was a past member of the Congregation Council.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Vera Berry Dale; a daughter, Shirley F. Fant of Silverstreet; three sisters, Margaret Burko of Silverstreet, Shirley Moyser of Quincy, WA and Iona Mae Cromis of Lytle Creek, CA; a brother, Warren Dale of Sumas, WA; a half brother, Calvin Dale of Ohio; three grandchildren, Patty Dale, John Dale and Bill Dale; nine great-grandchildren, Josh Dale, Perry Dale, Shannon Dale, Justin Pitts, Shane Dale, Chase Dale, Savannah Dale, Jonathan Serio, and Ashley Serio; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 4 P.M. Saturday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson, the Rev. Dr. Robert McCullum, the Rev. Rodney Gunter, and the Rev. Arden Hallman. Interment with full military honors was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.

Ruth Hamm Nichols

Ruth Hamm Nichols, 75, of 5664 Deadfall Road, Silverstreet and widow of David R. Nichols, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Palmetto Health Richland.
She was born in Macon, Georgia on February 10, 1934 to the late Rev. Dr. Luther Boyd Hamm and the late Mildred Wheeler Hamm.
Mrs. Nichols was a graduate of Columbia College and taught third grade at Reuben Elementary School for a number of years. She was an active member of Silverstreet Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James F. Clements, Jr. of Roswell, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Judy N. Nichols of Gilbert, SC; grandchildren, Amanda Nichols Johnson, Robin Melissa Nichols, James David Clements and Rebecca Robinson Clements; and sisters, Patricia Hamm Wagner of Seattle, WA, Virginia Hamm Shirley and Carol Hamm Strickland both of Hickory, NC.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson and the Rev. Dr. Robert McCullum. Interment was in Silverstreet Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.

W.E. "Bill" Turner, Jr.
March 23, 2009

W.E. “Bill” Turner, Jr. 86, of 2022 Mower St., Newberry, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 18, 1922 in Ninety Six, a son of the late W. E. Sr. and Ruth Osborne Turner. Mr. Turner was a Navy veteran of World War II and the past owner of W.E. Turner Jewelers of Newberry. He was an honorary member of the Newberry Fire Department where he was a volunteer for many years and was also a former member of the Smiling Swingers Square Dance Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Adelphian and Fellowship Sunday School class.
Mr. Turner was first married to the late Velma Parsons Turner for 48 years. He is survived by his current wife, Grace Yon Turner of Newberry; three sons and their wives, William E. III and Anna Melissa Turner of Laurens, David Len and Debbie P. Turner of Newberry and Robert Wayne Turner of Salisbury, NC; and a step-daughter and her husband, Susan H. and Ralph DeLoach of Waterloo, SC.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were members of the Newberry Fire Department.

Charles Branders "Bran" Shealy

Charles Branders “Bran” Shealy, 56, of 483 Country Club Rd., Newberry, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at his residence.
He was born on January 6, 1953 in Newberry, a son of the late L.B. “Dick” and Lib Shealy. He was a former employee of the Country Club of Newberry and Campbell Electric Service. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Country Club of Newberry Men’s Golf Association. Throughout his life, Bran helped with numerous benefit golf tournaments.
He is survived by a daughter, Beth Shealy of Tallahassee, FL; a son, Aaron Shealy of West Palm Beach, FL, a sister, Pat (Jimmy) Daniel of Dallas, GA; step-daughters, Amy & Stacie; grandchildren, Catie Colon, Kenneth Colon, Mathue Scott, Aaron Shealy, and April Shealy; nieces, Emma & Sarah Daniel; and numerous step-grandchildren. Bran is also survived by many beloved friends.
Visitation was from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday at his residence, 483 Country Club Road, Newberry.
Funeral services were held at 6:30 PM Wednesday at the Country Club of Newberry Ballroom.

Mary Livingston Owens

Mary L. Owens of 11379 SC Highway 121, Newberry, widow of Chaplain Albert D. Owens died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Owens was born in Newberry on July 16, 1923 a daughter of the late Vernon J. Sr. and Lucille Buzhardt Livingston. She retired from the Newberry County Veterans Affairs Office. She was a member of Colony Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women of the ELCA and the Friendship Group. She was a former Sunday School teacher and Church Choir member. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Aleesa O. and Bill Vaughan of Newberry; a grandson, Johnathan L. Aull of Newberry; a great-grandson, Bryson L. Aull; and a sister, Patricia L. Harmon of Newberry.
Besides her husband, she was pre-deceased by a daughter, Faith Dewey Owens; brother, Vernon J. Livingston, Jr.; and a sister, Aline L. Wilson
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday at Colony Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jerry Trantham. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.
The family was at the residence, 11379 Highway 121, Newberry and did receive friends there Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M.

Ruth Bouknight Wicker

Ruth Bouknight Wicker, 85, formerly of Main St., Newberry, widow of Claude Wicker, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Wicker was born on March 29, 1923 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late W. Floyd and Lucy Cromer Bouknight. She was the owner and operator of Rugayle’s Beauty Shop for over 30 years.
She was a member of O’Neal Street United Methodist Church where she had been a member of the Bernice Martin Sunday School Class, the church choir, the Administrative Council, the PPRC Committee and the Kathleen Dubose Circle where she had served as Circle Leader. Additionally she had served as the Flower Coordinator for the church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 226 and a former member of the RSVP Singers.
She is survived by two sisters, Doris B. Wise of Newberry and Nedra B. Turner of Spartanburg; a brother, Rudolph Bouknight of Newberry. She was predeceased by a daughter, Gayle Wicker and two brothers, Carman Bouknight and Charles Bouknight
Funeral services were conducted 3:00 P.M. Monday at O’Neal St. United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family was at the residence of Rudolph Bouknight, 1408 Dave Dr., Newberry and did receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Margaret Harris

Weeta Margaret Harris, 93, formerly of 935 Jessica Ave., Newberry died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Springfield Place.
Miss Harris was born in Laurens County on June 7, 1915 a daughter of the late Richard Gray and Erin Addison Harris. She was a graduate of Columbia College and taught for many years in the public schools of Easley and Newberry.
She was a member of O’Neal Street United Methodist Church and the Nan Layton Circle. She was also a member of the Newberry Literary Study Club.
She is survived by her sister, Josephine “Jo” Harris Layton of Newberry; three nieces, Linda Harris Brown Fancher and her husband Ted Raymond of Spartanburg, Susan Harris Grady of Greenville and Nancy Harris Abrams and her husband Dr. Edward Morris of Myrtle Beach; two great nieces and five great nephews; two great great nieces and three great great nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, William Pinckney Harris, sister-in-law, Emma Heriot Harris, brother-in-law, Olin Carlisle Layton and two nephews-in-law, Earl Brown and Jack Grady.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd. Entombment was in Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn.
Visitation was from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Letha Williamson Brooks

Letha Williamson Brooks, 68, formerly of 3988 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, widow of William “Reggie” Brooks, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Lowman Home in White Rock, SC.
Mrs. Brooks was born on August 29, 1940 in Newberry County, a daughter of late S. Virgil and Fay Derrick Williamson. She was a retired broker/agent with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Gena (Chris) Turner of Pomaria; a son, Joey (Melodi) Brooks of Little Mountain; a sister, Edith Casey of Taylors; four grandchildren, Hannah Brooks and Lylah Brooks of Little Mountain and Jeremy Turner and Jessie Turner of Pomaria. She was predeceased by a grandson, C.J. Turner.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
