Mable E. Havird
May 31, 2005

Mable E. Havird, 98, formerly of 18 Abrams St., Silverstreet, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Miss Havird was born on February 1, 1907 in Silverstreet, a daughter of the late B. Mayer and Maggie Long Havird. She was a graduate of Newberry College and a member of Silverstreet Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A. and the F.C.L. Club. She taught school in Little Mountain, Pelzer and retired from Greenville Junior High School.
Miss Havird is survived by two sisters, Edna Havird Fly of Spartanburg and Mildred H. Vincent of Fort Belvoir, VA; a sister-in-law, Marquerite Havird of Silverstreet; eight nephews, Edward L. Fly of Warner Robbins, GA, Jerome F. Havird of Silverstreet, Dale L. Vincent of Port Washington, NY, John M. Fly of Spartanburg, Bruce H. Vincent of Houston, TX, Dr. Michael P. Vincent of Potomac, MD, Thomas H. Fly of Spartanburg, and David L. Havird of Shreveport, LA; a number of great nieces and nephews; and a number of great great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven brothers, Henry M. Havird, John Vernon Havird, , Jerome F. Havird, Berley M. Havird, Campbell Havird, Hugh L. Havird, and Paul B. Havird.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson and the Rev. Dr. Robert McCollum. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. on Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family was at 18 Abrams St. in Silverstreet.

Active pallbearers were Bobby Long, Grady Senn, Danny Senn, Henry Senn, Mike Willingham, Jim Waldrop, and Pete Stoudemire.

Herman McKay
May 31, 2005

Herman McKay, 86, of 2325 Rosalyn Drive, Newberry, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. McKay was born on June 11, 1918 in Romance, AR, a son of the late Oscar and Grady McKay. He was a US Army veteran of World War II paratrooper and was a retired superintendent at Kendall Company, Oakland Plant.
Mr. McKay is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janie Frick McKay of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Janie Ann and Wyman Bundrick of Woodstock, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Cathy McKay of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Lathrop McKay of Pomaria; a sister, Lola Hogan of Nevada; a brother, Kenneth McKay of California; grandchildren, Sheramy Bundrick and Chantell Bundrick, both of Atlanta, Ga, Jennifer Frady of Hardeeville, and Melanie McKay of Newberry; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Frady of Hardeeville; and a step-grandson and spouse, Tony and Joann Michau of Chapin,
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Hager.

Marcus E. Bates, Jr.

Marcus E. Bates, Jr., 74, of 342 Summer Oaks Drive, Prosperity, formerly of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.
Mr. Bates was born on September 18, 1930, in Converse, SC, a son of the late Marcus Erwin Bates, Sr. and Esther Brown Bates. He was a graduate of Cowpens High School and Cecil’s Business College and was a US Army veteran serving in the Korean War. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Whitney Masonic Lodge #264 in Spartanburg.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Myrtle Marr Bates of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl B. and Lee Reynolds of Gaffney; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith E. Bates of West Columbia, Jeffrey W. Bates of Spartanburg, and Phillip M. and Devlyn Bates of McKinney, TX; two sisters, Jacqueline McIntyre of Weaverville, NC, and Ann Sanders of Greenville; a brother, Billy Bates of Hendersonville, NC; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Leticia Parrish.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Maybelle Kinard Wright

Maybelle Kinard Wright, 101, of 917 South Main Street, Prosperity, widow of Clayton S. Wright, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Wright was born on November 23, 1903 in Pomaria, a daughter of the late Dantzler L. and Mary Alice Koon Kinard. She was the oldest member of Wightman United Methodist Church, Pearl Counts Circle, and the United Methodist Women. She was a World War I widow. She was a former employee of the US Naval Accounting Office in Charleston, SC, and a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Wright is survived by a daughter, Voris W. Bowers of Prosperity; a brother, John Kinard of Chapin; two granddaughters, Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; two great-grandsons, Terry A. Morris and Randel (Ron) S. Abrams, Jr., both of Prosperity; three great-great grandchildren, Michael A. Morris, Elijah D. Abrams, and Olivia Grace Abrams. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Bundrick and Lurlene Graham; three brothers, Joe W. Kinard, Colie B. Kinard and Virgil D. Kinard.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment was in Prosperity Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of Voris W. Bowers, 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity.
Active pallbearers were Terry Morris, Ron Abrams, Robert Davis, Earl Graham, Jr., Colie Kinard, Arthur Kinard, Eddie Bundrick and Ludy Werts.

Richard D. Heath

Richard D. Heath, 85, formerly of 808 Lakewood Dr., Prosperity, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the J.F. Hawkins Healthcare.
Mr. Heath was born on January 26, 1920 in Streator, IL, second child a son of the late Charles D. and Helen Fallon Heath. He retired as a Sgt/Major from the U.S. Army after 29 years of service. He was a veteran of WW II having been wounded in Sicily. He was post commander of VFW Post 6740. He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Heath is survived by his wife of 63years, Virginia Mae Heath of the home; a daughter, Rachel L. Singleton of Appling GA; eight sons, Daniel R. Heath of Lexington, David P. Heath of Columbia, Robert R. Heath of Rock Hill, Michael P. Heath of Southport, NC, James J. Heath of Columbia, Steven J. Heath of Warren, PA, Richard N. Heath of Gilbert, and Patrick K. Heath of Charleston; two sisters, Joan Groene of Ladd, IL and Helen Schuller of New Castle, PA; four brothers, Gene Heath of Tampa, FL, Phillip Heath of Corvallis, OR, Charles Heath, Seattle, WA, and Paul Heath of Tacoma, WA; 26 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was offered at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church by Father Lee Selzer. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens with military rites.
Rosary was recited at 6:30 P.M. Friday and the visitation was from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

D. Ralph Kinard

D. Ralph Kinard, 83, of White Oak Manor, formerly of 5674 Jollystreet Road, Newberry, widower of Vera K. Kinard, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Kinard was born on July 31, 1921 in Prosperity, a son of the late J. Alonzo and Belle Livingston Kinard. He was a member of Bachman Chapel Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Golden Agers. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from Kendall Company, Oakland Plant.
Mr. Kinard is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Steve E. and Linda M. Kinard of Newberry; three grandchildren and spouse, Belinda K. (Johnny) Trammell of Newberry, Elizabeth C. Able and Edward B. Able, both of Laurens; and one great grandson, John Steven Trammell of Newberry. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Kinard Able. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were conducted at 3: 00 P.M. Friday at Bachman Chapel Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev. Floyd Sides. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the home, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kinard, 6315 Jollystreet Road, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were Wayne Dowd, Robert Dowd, Monroe Fulmer, Rudy Able, Nelson Kinard, and A.J. Kinard, Jr.

W. Ralph Frederic, 54, of 377 Wheeland School Road, Little Mountain, died Monday, May 09, 2005 at the Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Frederic was born on December 31, 1950, a son the late James C. “Jim” Frederic, Sr. and Prudence Greer Frederic. He was retired truck driver. He was a member of St. Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church and attended St. James Lutheran Church.
Mr. Frederic is survived by wife Vivian Frick Frederic of the home; a daughter, Lauren M. Frederic of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jimmy Dantzler of Orangeburg; a brother and sister-in-law, James C. Frederic, Jr. and Sheryle Frederic of Greenwoood.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P. M. Thursday at the St. Peter (Pineywood) Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rodney Gunter and the Rev. David Tholstrup. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M Wednesday. The family was at the residence, 377 Wheeland School Road, Little Mountain.

Lillie Verna Minick

Lillie Verna Minick, 85, of the Lowman Home, died Saturday May 7, 2005 at the Lowman Home.
Ms. Minick was born on March 4, 1920 in Saluda County, the daughter of the late Olin Watson and Susan Inez Shaw Minick.
Lillie was an active resident at the Lowman Home. She was a member of the chimes choir, the chapel choir, and was the pianist for Bethany and other resident buildings. She was a member of Epting United Methodist Church, and was a devoted sister and aunt.
Ms. Minick is survived by two sisters, Mary M. Nabors of Laurens and Rae M. Cavaleri of Evans, GA; a brother, W. Meadors Minick of Saluda; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Irene M. Crapps and Nell M. Betchman; and four brothers, Steve Minick, Joe Robert Minick, Johnie Minick, and Billy Minick.
Memorial services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Lowman Home by Chaplain Gary Lyerly. Private burial were in Springdale Section, Rosemont Cemetery.

Mary Ellen McLaurin Carter

Mary Ellen McLaurin Carter, 88, of 655 Mendenhall Road, Newberry, died Friday, May 6, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Carter was born on April 25, 1917 in Bethune, SC, a daughter of the late A.B. and Daisy McDonald McLaurin. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She graduated from Flora McDonald College and was a teacher for the United States military in Japan, Germany, and Panama. She also taught in public schools in California, Connecticut, and South Carolina.
In 1959 she married the late W.C. “Billy” Carter of Newberry. Since then she and her husband were the principals of Carter and Holmes Orchids along with Owen and Raye Holmes. They were both very active in supporting education and the arts in Newberry.
Mrs. Carter is survived by one brother and his wife, John D. and Dot McLaurin of Bethune and four nieces, Louise McLaurin-Hahn, Marjorie Cason, Ellen Smith, and Mary Anne McLaurin Norwood. She is also survived by her husband’s cousins, Joe Summer of Charlotte, NC, who was raised in the Carter home and Owen Holmes and his wife Raye Holmes and their son, Mac Holmes all of Newberry. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Alexander B. McLaurin, Jr. and her sister, Lorena Troeger
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Interment was the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. on Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Ethel Betchman Mims, 85, of Lowman Home, widow of John W. Mims, died Monday 2, 2005 at the Lowman Home.
Mrs. Mims was born on Oct. 11, 1919 in Newberry, the daughter of the late John Emmett and Mertie Richardson Betchman. She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Mims is survived her son, Ronald W. Mims of Chapin.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. John Miller.

Julius Carlisle “Junebug” Fulmer

Julius Carlisle “Junebug” Fulmer, 84, of 2270 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at his residence.
Mr. Fulmer was born on December 29, 1920 in Lexington County, a son late Lemuel Mitchum and Rhoda Berley Shealy Fulmer. He was an Army veteran of World War II and he was a retired employee of Fairfield Tractor Company of Columbia with over 50 years of employment. He was member of the Macedonia Lutheran Church, a charter member of Fairview Fire Department, and a former member of American Legion Post # 90.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, he is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ruby Amick Fulmer of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Carlisle Fulmer Bobb and Frederick Bobb of Prosperity and Retha F. Frick and J. Steven Frick of Little Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon F. Fulmer, Sr. and Brenda F. Fulmer of Prosperity; two sisters, Annie Julia Wessinger of Chapin and Gladys F. Amick of Prosperity; a brother, H. Grady Fulmer of the Lowman Home, White Rock; three grandchildren and spouses, Lynnette F. and Todd Lever of Pomaria, Leon Jr. and Meredith Fulmer of Chapin, and Rhonda E. Frick of Little Mountain; three great-grandchildren, William “Will” F. Lever, Shelby G. Lever, Leon “Lee” F. Fulmer, III. He was predeceased by a sister, Katie Belle Seay and two brothers, Hubert and George Fulmer.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. Thursday at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Randall Derrick. Interment was in church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Leon F. Fulmer, Sr., 2811 Dreher Island Road, Prosperity.
Memorial may be made to Macedonia Lutheran Church, 3216 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity SC 29127.
Active pallbearers were Donald Wise, Dean Wise, Harry Amick, Roy Fulmer, Ronnie Fulmer, Heyward Seay, Brian Amick, and Claude Lindler.
