Charles Gary Harshman
June 26, 2008

Charles Gary Harshman, 58, of 24568 US Highway 76, Newberry, died Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Harshman was born in Middletown, Ohio on January 30, 1950 to the late Charles and Fannie Potts Harshman. He retired as a US Navy Seal after 30 years of service and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War.
He served as a sergeant with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and was the recipient of the 2007 Corrections Officer of the Year for Newberry County.
Mr. Harshman is survived by his wife Lynn Yarbrough of Newberry; his children, Casey and Michelle Harshman, Jason Harshman, Jeremy Harshman and Lisa and Ron Poe all of Ohio; Erica Mihalik, Joseph Mihalik and Jody Yarbrough all of Newberry, and Amanda Yarbrough of Greensboro, NC; mother-in-law, Margaret Roton Bowers of Newberry; former in-laws, Tommy and Susan Langford of Newberry; and 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a twin brother.
Funeral services with military rites were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and the Ringer Enterprises Softball Team.

Ruby Wilson Chapman
June 23, 2008

Ruby Wilson Chapman, 92, of 5663 SC Highway 395, widow of Malcolm Harrison Chapman, left her loved ones Monday, June 23, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on September 9, 1915 in Newberry County to the late George Calhoun and Claudia Mae Long Wilson. She was a graduate of Stoney Hill High School, Class of 1933, and twice retired from Old School Manufacturing. She was a dedicated and beloved member of the Flowers From the Heart family. She loved quilting, crocheting, sewing, cooking, gardening, her flowers, and anything she could do with her hands. Known as Gannie Ruby, Grandmama and Gruby, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“Miss Ruby” was a life long member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the Adult I Sunday School Class and a charter member of the Lula Hunter Circle of WELCA.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Harriett and Fred Kesler; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Cammie Chapman of Stanley, NC; Grandchildren and their spouses, Travis Chapman, Becky and Brian Kinard. Christie and Scott Gardner and James Kesler all of Newberry; great grandchildren, Jessica Chapman, Brianna and Baylee Kinard and Payton and Austin Gardner; step grandchildren and spouses, Andrea Godwin of Charlotte and Kelly and Clare Miller of Huntersville; step great-grandchildren, Lilly Godwin and Brayden Miller; sisters, Virginia Wicker, Carolyn Norris, and Christine Dennis all of Newberry and a brother, Clarence Wilson of Newberry. She was predeceased by her brothers, Maxey and Woodrow Wilson.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arden Hallman and the Rev. Henry Brandt. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Travis Chapman and James Kesler, and nephews, Pete Wilson, Joe Wilson, Joel Wilson, Don Dennis and Von Dennis. Honorary Pallbearers were the members of the Adult I Sunday School Class and the Lula Hunter Circle, Janie Partain, Frances Long, Pattie Eckstein, Gloria Harman, Carol Jean Garner and Joann Cousins.

James Howard Noble
June 10, 2008

James Howard Noble, 66 of 938 Colony Church Road, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on November 11, 1941, in Hackensack, NJ, to the late Howard Jay Noble and Anna Knapp Noble Zampacorta. He was retired from International Paper Company.
Mr. Noble was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was an avid model train and train tracks builder.
Surviving are his spouse, Terry Russo Noble of Newberry; a daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Ivory Green of Newberry; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles and Flora Noble of Virginia Beach, VA and Thomas Noble of Newberry; a grandson, Logan Noble of Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by a son, John Patrick Noble and infant sister, Mary Noble.
Memorial services were conducted at 6:00 P.M. Saturday, at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink.

Donald E. Cochell
June 9, 2008

Donald E. Cochell, 85, of 1416 Griffith Park, Newberry, died Monday, June 9, 2008 at his residence.
Mr. Cochell was born on May 1, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Hudson and Mildred Beutel Cochell. He was retired from Detroit Edison Company after 44 years of service. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp serving for three and a half years during World War II
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1985. Prior to joining St. Paul, he was a member of Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church in Detroit where he had been a member since birth. He attended Southeastern High School in Detroit. Mr. Cochell coached Little League and middle age baseball for 20 years. He was involved in vestry at Christ Church and was Sunday school teacher for 25 years. He served on church council at St. Paul. He was a member of Lutheran Men in Mission becoming a lifetime member in April, 2007. He served on the Newberry City Planning Commission for 18 years and helped with the Meals on Wheels with the Council on Aging for 20 years. He was a member of the Newberry Dance Club and a former member of the Newberry Country Club.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy Berly Cochell of Newberry; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. and Renee Cochell of Brandon, FL, Richard B. and Ann Cochell of Alpharetta, GA and John H and Tracy Cochell of Alpharetta, GA; a sister Shirley Durance of Midland, Michigan; four grandchildren, Ryan Cochell and his wife Lauren, Patrick Cochell, Burke Cochell and Claire Cochell. He was predeceased by his brothers Calvin, Charles and Robert Cochell.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Burial was in the Church Cemetery. The body was placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Casket bearers were Tim Berly, Scott Eberl, Mark Eberl, Paul Durance, Jay Berley, Michael Berley, Bruce Berley and Phil Berley.

Ella B. Stevens

Ella B. Stevens, 78, formerly of 2045 Montgomery St., widow of William T. Stevens, died Monday, June 09, 2008 at Springfield Place.
Mrs. Stevens was born on January 27, 1930 in Winnsboro to the late Ransom Samuel and Ophelia Gray Bush. She was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and was a retired employee of Newberry Mills.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by four sisters, Brenda Calvitt of Lexington, Annie Amick of Chester, Betty Gresham of Union, and Mary McJunkin of Newberry; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ransom “Randy” Bush of Silverstreet and John “Buddy” and Bobbie Bush of Honea Path; sister-in-law and husband, Shirley and Clarence Livingston; sisters-in-law: Cedalia Stevens, Virginia Stevens, Toby Bush, and Alice Bush; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Margaret Markee and Gladys Wilson; two brothers, Curtis Bush and Richard Bush; and a sister-in-law, Jean Bush.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 PM, Thursday, at Whitaker Funeral Home by Gail Willard. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Pallbearers were her nephews: Jimmy Wilson, Rocky Amick, Michael McJunkins, Christopher McJunkins, Wayne Gresham, Rusty Calvitt, and Sean Luke McJunkins.
Honorary pallbearers were David Bush, Roger Smith, Dale Atkerson, Mike Smith, and Freddie Loftis.

Edna Havird Fly
June 5, 2008

Edna Havird Fly, 96, of 268 Lake Forest Drive, Spartanburg, widow of Edward Leroy Fly, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
She was born on April 1, 1912 in Silverstreet to the late Benjamin Mayer and Maggie Susan Long Havird.
Mrs. Fly was retired from Green Textile and was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church of Spartanburg.
She is survived by three sons, Edward Leroy Fly of Warner Robins, GA, John Mayer Fly and Thomas Havird Fly both of Spartanburg; a sister Mildred Havird Vincent of Ft. Belvoir, VA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Her grandchildren did serve as pallbearers.

Mary Long Culp
June 2, 2008

Mary M. Long Culp of Mooresville, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2008. She was born in the Mount Pilgrim section of Newberry County in 1912, a daughter of the late John H. Walter Long and Florence Waters Long. She attended the Newberry County schools and is an alumnus of Newberry College. She was a devoted, caring and giving person to the family and the community. Mrs. Culp was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Mooresville, NC, and a former member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Prosperity.
Services were held at Central United Methodist Church and interment at Glenwood Cemetery on June 5, at 2:00 PM.
Mrs. Culp is survived by her loving and devoted husband Rockwell M. Culp of the home and a son Dr. John R. Culp of Sarasota, Fl.; three wonderful grandchildren Alex, Amanda and Laura all of Sarasota, Fl. She is also survived by two loving and devoted nephews and a niece, Donald M. Long (Linda), John L. Long, both of Prosperity and Olivia C. Long of Manhattan NY; one great niece Donna L. Snelgrove (Dean) and two great nephews, Bryan E. Long (Kristal) of Prosperity, and Christopher Long; one great, great niece Stephanie N. Long and five great, great nephews Jesse D. Snelgrove, Justin S. Snelgrove, Jeremy D. Snelgrove, Casey A. Snelgrove and Jospeh A. Long of Presperity. She was predeceased by a special brother and sister-in-law, George W. and Pearl M. Long.
