Travis Levern Eargle
July 24, 2005

Travis Levern Eargle, died Sunday, July 24, 2005.
Mr. Eargle was born on August 30, 1938 in Richland County, SC, a son of the late James M. and Louise Chapman Eargle. He was a 1956 graduate of Chapin High School, and served in the US Army Reserve at Fort Jackson. He was a retired electrician with Thomas Electric Company, and was owner and operator of Eargles’ 66 Service Station in Chapin. He was a member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church.
Mr. Eargle is survived by his wife Mary Katherine Stone Eargle; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tracy and Lisa Eargle of Irmo, and Glenn Eargle of Chapin; a sister Lorene Eargle Cannon of Irmo; four brothers, Raymond Eargle of West Columbia, Dale Eargle of Irmo, Leland Eargle of Columbia, and Lemuel Eargle of Chapin; and two grandchildren, Rebecca Caroline Eargle and Travis Douglas Eargle of Irmo. He was predeceased by three brothers, John Eargle, B.L. Eargle, and Elton Eargle.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church by the Rev. Andrew Eargle. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.

Mary Inez King Kitchen
July 24, 2005

Mary Inez King Kitchen, 78, formerly of Kinards, widow of Lester Kitchen, died Sunday, July 24, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Kitchen was born on May 10, 1927 in Joanna, a daughter of the late William and Mittie Bedenbaugh King. She was a former employee of Joanna Mills and was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.
Mrs. Kitchen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Freddie Wingard of Newberry; a son and daughter-in-law, Donnie L. and Sandra J. Kitchen of Joanna; three sisters, Betty Goff of Myrtle Beach, Evelyn Campbell of Greenville, and Lula Bell Madden of Ware Shoals; three grandchildren and spouses, Shane and Amy Kitchen of Little Mountain, Lee Anne and Mike Egleston of Newberry, and Todd and Hollie Wingard of Joanna; six great-grandchildren, Derek Vereen, Nikki Wingard, Benji Wingard, Lynzi Wingard, Sophie Egleston, and Henry Egleston. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Wingard; three sisters, Ellen Madden, Daisy Hanson, and Verna Lee Nelson; and a brother, Thomas King.
Funeral services was conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Bernshausen and the Rev. Tommy Daum. Interment was in Bush River Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Fairview Baptist Church, Playground Fund, 4433 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, SC 29355.
Active pallbearers were nephews and grandson.

Walter D. Byrd
July 18, 2005

Reverend Walter D. Byrd, 51, of Prosperity, S.C., Pastor of the Church of God of Prophecy in Pacolet, S.C., founder of New Heart Ministries, a heart transplant recipient, Volunteer of helping families at Christmas, and WIS TV 10 weather helper, died Monday, July 18, 2005 at the Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Rev. Byrd is survived by his parents Dewey “D.B.” Byrd, Sr. and Audrey Byrd of Prosperity; his four children, Eric Byrd of Pelzer, Justin Byrd of Prosperity, Julie Byrd of Spartanburg, and Joseph Byrd of New York; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dewey Byrd, Jr. and Jackie Byrd of Saluda, Eddie and Sharon Byrd of Newberry; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Clarence Howard of Prosperity; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family was at the home of Dewey Sr. and Audrey Byrd, 107 Byrd St., Prosperity. Friends were received at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry on Wednesday, July 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21 at 3:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Prosperity, 115 Wessinger Rd. and US Highway 76. Interment did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Speakers for the services will be Rev. Alan Rhodes, Bishop Kenneth Baker, and Rev. Dale Gooding.
Pallbearers were members of his congregation.
Honorary Pallbearers were his nephews.

Bart Barrett
July 8,2005

God called Bart home on Friday, July 8th at 9:15pm. A Rosary Service for Bartlett Francis Barrett were held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin on Tuesday, July 12th at 7:00 P.M. and visitation did follow until 9:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial was on Wednesday, July 13 at 11:00 A.M. by Father Andrew J. Vollkommer in the Church with interment in the Church Cemetery.
Mr. Barrett was born June 27, 1917 in Boston Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Bartlett F. and Mary A. Sheehan Barrett.
He served in W.W. II as a paratrooper in the Army’s 13th and 82nd Airborne Division. Bart applied for a job and was interviewed by John McKeen at the Brooklyn NY plant of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. When Mr. McKeen took a look at his name and saw it was the same as the street in front of the plant--Bartlett Street--he was hired on the spot. He retired forty years later on June 25, 1982 as the general manager of Sorbitol/Organic 111. He was active in local politics and served the town of Waterford Connecticut as the treasurer for many years.
Bart saw Theresa Gore at a Kresge five and Dime in Jamaica New York and he knew immediately that she was the one. They were married on June 30, 1940 and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
Bart and Terry enjoyed spending time with their two daughters and their grandchildren, attending every event they could. They also enjoyed flower gardening, bowling and traveling together. They were faithful members and active volunteers of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Waterford Connecticut and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin.
Bart is survived by his wife, Terry and his two daughters, Theresa and husband Jim Earp of Concord NC and Lois and husband Barry Mather of Chapin. They have ten grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. He is survived by a brother William (Dorothy) of East Sandwich, Massachusetts and a sister Peggy (Roy) of Wheaton, Maryland; and two sister-in-laws. He was predeceased by sisters, Marion, Rita and Helen, and brothers Jackie and Frankie.
The family would like to thank the staff of Providence Hospital 4th floor and Heartland of Lexington for their kindness and care in the last month’s of Bart’s life.

Julia Harvin Weeks Stokes

Julia Harvin Weeks Stokes, 95, of Wesley Commons, Greenwood, SC died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Self Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Stokes was born in Newberry, the daughter of the late C. D. and Nancy Pool Weeks. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood and the Benson Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Stokes is survived by two sons, Douglas Weeks Stokes of Rock Hill and Dr. James Kenneth Stokes of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Dr. Douglas Weeks Stokes, Jr. of Greenville, Ashby Weeks Stokes and Taylor Tenison Stokes both of Greenwood, Dr. Mason Boyd Stokes of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Benjamin McCulloch Hord Stokes of Taylors; and seven great grandchildren, Douglas Boyd Stokes and GraceAnne Cheney Stokes both of Greenville, John McHardy Stokes and Barbara Reid Stokes both of Greenwood, Ashby Weeks Stokes, Jr. and Morgan Dahlberg Stokes both of Greenwood, and Virginia Tenison Stokes of Taylors; and a niece, Nancy Weeks Padget of Bethesda, MD.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. R. J. Roberts.
