Blondine Pendley Oliver
August 30, 2007

Blondine Pendley Oliver, 80, died Thursday, August 30, 2007 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry, SC.
Mrs. Oliver was born on April 14, 1927 in Marble Hill, GA a daughter of the late John Jackson Pendley and Evelyn Johnson P. Horton. She was a retired employee of the American Heart Association and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Ridge.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeannie (Steve) Mull Wilson of Leesville, SC; a brother, Ron (Jody) Pendley of Ball Ground, GA; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Mull of Columbus, GA; and six grandchildren, Ben Wilson, Pam Hester, Hamilton Wilson, Kevin Mull, Melissa Mull and Amber Mull. She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Hamilton “Charlie” Mull and her son, Charles Reid Mull.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:30 PM, Monday, September 3, 2007 in Hemp Cemetery in Blue Ridge, GA by the Rev. Richard Gibbs.
The family did receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Monday at the Akins Funeral Home in Blue Ridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, PA 23058-5216 or to the Hospice Care of Tri County, 166 Stonebridge Dr., Columbia, SC 29210-8239.

Janie Cothran Whitaker Martin
August 26, 2007

Janie Cothran Whitaker Martin, 91, formerly of 1934 Nance St., Newberry, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Springfield Place.
Mrs. Martin was born on Sept. 1, 1915 in Belton, a daughter of the late Rueben Dawkins and Olive Kathryn Reid Cothran. She attended the public schools in Newberry, Newberry College and the University of S.C. She participated in the U.S. government sponsored Modern Foreign Language Institutes in 1960 and 1962.
She taught English, Spanish and Psychology in the public schools of Newberry for 30 years. In 1970, she was presented the Outstanding Teacher Award by the S.C. Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
As long as her health permitted, she was active in community affairs. She was a member and office holder in the Newberry Civic League, The Parent Teachers Association, and Newberry Council of Garden Clubs, The N.E.A., the S.C.E.A., and the Retired Teachers Association. In Sept. of 2000, she received a Commendation from the S.C. House of Representatives on her 85th birthday celebration which honored her for dedication to her family, friends, and the multitude of students whom she motivated to academic achievement during her teaching career
She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served in many capacities: Sunday School teacher, Young Peoples leader, Women’s Missionary Union, GA’s and YWA’s as well as various committees.
She was twice married, first to the late Ralph H. Whitaker and second to the late Parker F. Martin. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Philip Spotts of Newberry and Janice and David Glover of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Kelley (Michael) Pfeffer, Dr. Kenley (Meg) Loftis, Katie (Jeff) Jackson and Kay Hampton; two step-grandchildren Hunter Spotts and Langston Spotts; seven great grandsons; and three step-great grandsons. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth “Dit” Thornton.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens at 10 A.M., prior to the funeral service.
The family did receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Spotts, 8660 S.C. Highway 395, Newberry from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. on Wednesday.

Gwendolyn Chapman Lindler

Gwendolyn Chapman Lindler, 82, of Lewisville, NC passed away Friday, August 17, 2007, in Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville, NC. She was born January 3, 1925, in Newberry County, SC, to Franklin Talmage and Zula Stockman Chapman. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church, where she was very active in many positions over the years. She was a
retired schoolteacher from South Carolina and North Carolina
with many years of service. She thoroughly enjoyed singing at the nursing center where she would have everyone singing hymns, and she sang right up until the very end. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John David Lindler, and son, David Lindler. She is survived by her loving son, John Paul Lindler and wife, Karen of Lewisville, and loving daughter, Ruth Ann Lindler, of Lewisville; 2 grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Lindler. She is also survived by a niece and 3 nephews.
Funeral service were conducted Sunday, August 19, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Lutheran Church, with the Pastor Amy Crump officiating. The family did receive friends after the service in the Education Building. The burial did follow at 11:00 AM Monday in Peak Cemetery in Peak, SC. Ollie Morris Perry

Ollie Morris Perry, 83, of Newberry, formerly of 2444 S.C. Highway 395, Newberry, widow of Thomas B. Perry, died Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on March 18, 1924 in the Stoney Hill Section of Newberry County, a daughter of the late John Vernon “Bud” and Leona Livingston Morris.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Perry is survived by a daughter, Lucy P. Moates of Pomaria; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald T. and Joan Perry of Newberry, Robert S. and Francelle Perry of West Columbia, James V. and Sara Perry of Chester, and Danny L. and Karen Perry of Mt. Pleasant; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Preston Kunkle of Newberry; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Perry; a sister, Mary Kinard; and two brothers, Ned Morris and Richard Morris.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers were her grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be her nieces and nephews

Dorothy “Dot” Wade Watson

Dorothy “Dot” Wade Watson, 87, of Springfield Place, Newberry SC, widow of J. Drake Watson, died Tuesday, August, 7, 2007 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 15, 1920 in Timmonsville, SC, a daughter of the late Jesse Deshields and Dorothy Virginia McCormick Wade. She was a graduate of Timmonsville High School and a 1942 Graduate of Lander College. She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church and was a strong supporter of the Newberry YMCA.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, J. Drake Watson Jr. and Katharine Richards Watson of Richmond VA; and three grandchildren, James R. Watson, Dorothy A. Watson, and J. Drake Watson, III.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Mitchell VanMeter.

Juanita Hunter Long

Juanita Hunter Long, 88, of Newberry, widow of L. Hubert Long, died Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Springfield Place.
Mrs. Long was born on July 28, 1919 in the St. Luke’s Community of Newberry County, a daughter of the late J. Raymond and Sue Lester Hunter.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,, Jennie L. and Jackie Runyan of Simpsonville; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Elliott Long of Cross Hill, Gerald Long of Chapin, Derald and Ruth Long of Flowery Branch, GA, and Heber and Margaret Long and James and Janet Long all of Newberry; a sister Suzette Frick of Chapin; a brother, Ray Hunter of Prosperity; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Lester Hunter and her step-mother, Jennie L. Hunter.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
