Lera Duncan Dickert
August 23, 2009

Lera Duncan Dickert, 93, formerly of Leita Street, widow of Daniel C. Dickert, Sr. died Sunday August 23, at White Oak Manor, Newberry.
She was born in Newberry, July 23, 1916, the daughter of the late Clarence and Lera Long Duncan. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Dickert is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel C., Jr. and Sandra Dickert of Prosperity; Ronald C., Sr., and Rosemarie Dickert, of Newberry; two sons-in-law, Robert L. Forbis, of Newberry, and Leo F. Thomas, Jr. of Lexington; a brother, Paul Duncan of Newberry; a sister, Kathryn Riebe of Newberry; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughters, Peggy D. Forbis and Susan D. Thomas, five sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 A.M., Wednesday, at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Stephen Todd and Rev. Caldwell Day. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were Cannon Dickert, Ronnie Dickert, Jr., Ryan Dickert, Mark Kesler, Shannon Pollard and Andy Senn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Oak Manor 2555 Kinard Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 511 O’Neal Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

James L. Barefield, 63, of 3719 Deer Lane, Newberry, died Monday, August 10, 2009 at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia
He was born in Mexia, TX on April 28, 1946. He was an employee of Work Services, Inc. of Newberry.
Mr. Barefield is survived by numerous friends and co-workers.
A private funeral services were conducted.

Mary Helen Slice Hyler
August 8, 2009

Mary Helen Slice Hyler, 69, of 1602 First St., Newberry, widow of Billy G. Hyler, Jr., died Saturday at her residence.
She was born on September 24, 1939, a daughter of the late James J. “Jim” and Carrie Boland Slice. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Hyler was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; Bridget and Arthur Moody, of Newberry and Jacqueline and Dwight Watson of West Columbia; and a grandson, Brandon Hyler of Newberry. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rhonda Faye Hyler; and brothers, John Slice, Jake Slice, Sam Slice, Calvin Slice, Mendal Slice, and Robert Slice.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, at Bethany Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Robert McCullum. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Springdale Section.
The family was at the residence of Bridget and Arthur Moody, 208 Rollin Rd., Newberry and did receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, Wednesday, at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were Bobby Fuller, Barry Cathcart, Billy Watson, JR Roper, Brandon Hyler, and Lee Turner.

Elise McElroy Smith

Elise McElroy Smith, 90, formerly of 2219 Adelaide St., Newberry, wife of the late Harold E. Smith, died Thursday, August 6, 2009 at National Health Care, Lexington.
Mrs. Smith was born May 3, 1919, in Monroe, GA to the late Coey and Beaulah Fambrough McElroy. She was a member Epting Memorial United Methodist Church. She retired as a seamstress from Damon. She loved to travel with Christian Tours and Epteens.
Mrs. Smith is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Gary P. and Margaret Smith of Cayce, and Michael C. and Faye Smith of Cayce; two grandchildren, Christy Smith and Davin Smith; and a great grandson, Preston. She is also survived by a special niece, Susan Carithers of Ellenwood, GA. She was predeceased by sisters, Mae Kitchens, Clara Waldrop, Sarah Smith; and brother, Edwin McElroy.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M., Sunday at Epting Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. David Inman. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M., Saturday, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were James Bouknight, Paul West, Jimell Boyd, Steve Neese, Ryan Neese, Gerald Perry, and Robert "Bobby" Perry.

Bette Herron Courtenay

Bette Herron Courtenay, 64, or 391 Gravel Rd., Prosperity, died Friday, July 31, 2009 at Saluda Nursing Center.
Mrs. Courtenay was born on March 30, 1945, a daughter of the late Elaine and Arthur Herron. She was a former employee of Otis Spunkmeyer. She loved cooking, fishing, hunting and almost anything outdoors.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon E. Shore, Sr. of the residence; daughter, Pam Courtenay; son, Danny Courtenay; step-daughter, Christine Erskine; step-sons, Gordon E. Shore, Jeff Shore, and Kevin Shore; brother, Arthur Herron; 2 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren

Alan Donald Lidbury

Alan D. Lidbury, 48, of 159 Churchill Landing Road, Prosperity, SC and formerly of the Chicago, IL area, died at his residence.
He was born in Park Ridge, IL, a son of Mary Sutherland Lidbury and the late Donald Edward Lidbury.
Mr. Lidbury graduated from Columbia International University and served four years in the United States Marine Corps. Alan enjoyed jogging and construction and was a devout Christian who loved God.
Mr. Lidbury is survived by his mother and step-father, Doug Johnson, of North Branch, MN; sister and brother-in-law, Lynn Lidbury and Jeff Fields of Park Forest, IL; brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Sandy Lidbury of McHenry, IL; and nephews, Bryce and Brody Lidbury. He was predeceased by a nephew, Johnathan Fields.
Funeral services were conducted at 7:00 PM, Thursday, at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by Byron Bullard, Alan’s best friend.
