Kathleen Mims Summer
September 27, 2005

Kathleen Mims Summer, 66, of 1951 Cromer Lane, Newberry, wife of David Beam Summer, died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
Mrs. Summer was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late Solomon and Eleanor Watts Mims. She attened North Charleston High School and the College of Charleston. She was the organizer and first director of the Newberry Academy Kindergarten in 1967. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and throughout the years she taught Week-Day Church School, Vacation Church School, Sunday School, and First Year Catechism Class. She served on various committees of the church, served on the Congregational Council several times, serving as Secretary, Vice-Chairman. She also served as Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee and served on the Building in Grace, Growing to Serve Committee. She was a long time member and Past President of the Newberry Garden Club, and she was a charter member of the Carolinian Society, having served as Chairman of the Board of Governors.
Mrs. Summer is survived by her husband of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor Lucille S. and Robin Hefka of Mt. Pleasant; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Beam (Jr.) and Anne Summer of Charleston and William Carroll Summer, II of Greer; one sister and brother-in-law Nancy-Louise and Ronald B. Rowland of Folly Beach; seven grandchildren, David Beam Summer, III, Emily Newman Summer, Margaret Louise Hefka, Frances Elizabeth Hefka, Robert Riford Hefka, William Riley Briggs Summer, and Robert Davis Summer; nieces and nephews; and beloved and cherished friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Selena Chapman Baker
September 26, 2005

Selena Chapman Baker, 47, of West Columbia, died Monday, September 26, 2005 at the Lexington Medical Center.
Ms Baker was born on October 12, 1957 in Newberry, a daughter of Myra Epting Chapman and the late Lewis E. Chapman. She graduated from Newberry High School and received a degree from the University of South Carolina in 1977. She was employed at First Citizens Bank in Columbia since 1978 and was currently Senior Vice President, Mergers and Acquisitions. She was a former member of Colony Lutheran Church and an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. She was very interested in the arts and sang with the Arpad Daraz Singers.
Ms. Baker is survived by her mother of Newberry; one sister and brother-in-law Caroline C. and Rick Busch of Doswell VA; and two nieces, Madison Halley Busch and Georgia Ellen Busch
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arden Hallman and the Rev. Delano Ricard. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of her mother, 3618 Stoney Hill Road, Newberry.

Mildred Epting Davis
September 24, 2005

Mildred Epting Davis, 88, formerly of 728 Parr Rd., Little Mountain, SC, widow of James W. “Jim” Wilson, died Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Davis was born on Nov. 19, 1916 in Little Mountain, a daughter of the late Quincy A. and Ellen Wheeler Epting. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and she was a former Sunday School teacher.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Judith H. Davis of Little Mountain and Paul A. and Lynn C. Davis of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren and spouses, Lisa D and Joel Joel Yarborough of Pomaria, Lauren M. Davis of Dallas, TX, James W. Davis of Mt. Pleasant, Lindsey Lake of Mt. Pleasant and Breanna L. and Chris Baker of Greer; two great grandchildren, Leah M. Yarborough of Columbia and Domenic Baker of Greer; and a sister, Ruby Davis of Savanah, GA. She was predeceased by three sisters, Lucile Barrier, Jessie Koon, and Elberta Metts and a brother, Frank Epting.
Funeral services were conducted 4:00 P.M. Monday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. Karl Suhr and the Rev. Pierce Evans. Interment was in the church cemetery.
The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Davis, 505 Parr Road, Little Mountain.

James Henry Davis

James Henry Davis, 86, formerly of 2217 Henry Ave., Newberry, widower of Beatrice “Bea” Kennerley, Davis, died Friday, September 23, 2005.
Mr. Davis was born in Newberry, a son of the late Walter H. and Myra Sligh Davis. He was a Marine veteran of WW II and was a retired businessman. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Men’s Sunday School Class and he was a 50-year member of the Newberry Rotary Club. He was a former Scout Master for Troop 222 and was a former Volunteer Fireman with the Newberry Fire Department.
Mr. Davis is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara D. and Ralph Jones of Mauldin, Diane D. and Boyd “Buck” Webber of Prosperity, and Linda D. Byrd and her fiancée, James G. Hudson of Anderson; a son and daughter-in-law, James Kennerley "Ken" and Amelia Monts Davis of Lancaster; 11 grandchildren, Jerome Jones, Lee Shinn, Lori Anne McDonald, Michael Shinn, Sharon Cunningham, James Shinn, Melanie Shinn, Melinda Edwards, Susan Davis, Paige Byrd, and Andy Davis; 11 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Myra D. Phillips of Spartanburg and Nell D. Bohannan of Xenia,OH. He was predeceased by two sisters, Macie King and Faye Cooper and two brothers, Heyward Davis and John Davis
Funeral services were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. John Miller. Entombment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 4:00 to 5:00 P. M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Earl W. Crapps

Earl W. Crapps, 88, of 3439 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, widower of Ruth Robinson Crapps, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 at his residence.
Mr. Crapps was born in Gilbert, a son of the late John J. and Mattie Clamp Crapps. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving as a medic and a retired employee of Greenwood Mills, Joanna Plant.
Mr. Crapps was a Bishop in the Non-Denominational Church in Kinards. He was an avid gardener and accomplished woodworker and carver.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and he is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Sharon C. Batson of Wilmington, NC, Brenda and John Nickerson of Yonges Island and Mary Ann Sulik of Kinards; a daughter-in-law, Sue Crapps of West Columbia; four sisters, Myrtle Baughman of Graniteville, Alice Hunnicutt of Kinards, Naomi Wicker of Newberry, and Lucy Hall of Aiken; four brothers, Felton Crapps, Tilman Crapps and Tallie Crapps, all of Kinards and Harry Crapps of Leesville; 11 grandchildren, Lorenda Batson, Jeffery Batson, Deborah Batson, Duane Price, Caroline Sandlin, Bonnie Copes, Brianna Schraw, Brittany Humphries, Wendy Gilliard, Carli Sulik, and Rex Sulik; and 10 great grandchildren, Joshua Batson, Sarah Batson, Jamie Hayes, Zachary Price, Jaidon Schraw, Kyleigh Schraw, Kayla Sulik, Alexia Gilliard, Bryson Gilliard, and Allorah Sulik. He was predeceased by a son, Don Crapps, a son-in-law, Vernon Batson, a sister, Maggie Robinson, and a brother, Milas Crapps
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Clinton Goff, Al Goff, and Robert Johnson. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 1:30 to 2:30 PM Saturday prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Mary Sue Killian Livingston

Mary Sue Killian Livingston, 46, of 145 Elbert Hunter Road, Newberry, wife of Jack P. Livingston, died in a motorcycle accident, Saturday, September 17, 2005.
Mrs. Livingston was born on January 12, 1959 in Newberry County, a daughter of Peggy Boozer Killian of Prosperity and the late O. Alonzo Killian. She was the E 911 Supervisor of Communication at Newberry Sheriff Department. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials and the National Emergency Number Association.
Mrs. Livingston is survived by her husband; her mother; one daughter, Shelly Marie Livingston of Newberry; two sons, Jason Alonzo Livingston and Jefferson James Livingston both of Newberry: three sisters, Debra Killian Beard and Linda Killian Bratton both of Newberry, and Lisa Dale Killian Lever of Prosperity; three grandchildren, Patrick Alonzo Livingston, Haylee Noelle Livingston and Jada Nichole Lane; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kayla Anne Livingston.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at St Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arden Hallman. Interment was in the church cemetery. Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at her residence, 145 Elbert Hunter Road, Newberry.

George Wallace “Poe” Duncan

George Wallace “Poe” Duncan, 80, of 2809 Fair Ave., Newberry, widower of Nell W. Duncan, died at his residence, September 16, 2005.
Mr. Duncan was born on April 22, 1925 in Chester County, a son of the late George W. and Athea Holder Duncan. He was a retired employee from Kendall Company, Oakland Plant, and also worked for Senior Catering. He was a member of Lewis United Methodist Church.
Mr. Duncan is survived by daughter, Susan D. Lee of Prosperity; two sons, Kip Duncan of Newberry and Biff Duncan of Piedmont; two sisters, Ann Henderson of Rock Hill and Dot Duncan of Chester; one brother, Ray Duncan of Rock Hill; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceased by two sons, Charles Jonathan Duncan and Earl Wayne Duncan and a great grandson, Genesis Duncan.
Memorial services was held at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church on Sunday at 4:00 P. M.
Private gravesides service were Tuesday at 2:00 P.M for friends and family at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester.

Herbert Lee Gilliam
September 13, 2005

Herbert Lee Gilliam, 70, of 236 Bedford Way, Prosperity, SC formerly of Newberry, died at Lexington Medical Center, Tuesday, September 13, 2005.
Mr. Gilliam was born in Newberry, a son of the late Lonnie B. and Ora Lee Bridges Gilliam. He was a member of the S. C. National Guard for 23 years and a member of the 246 Army Band. He was a retired high school band director. While at McDuffie High School in Anderson, the school marching band under his direction won over 50 1St Place Trophies and was invited on three occasions to participate in the Mardi Gras Parade.
Mr. Gilliam was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, the Neal Truesdall Sunday School Class, Amity Masonic Lodge # 87, the S. C. Music Educators Association, the S.C. Retired Teachers Association, a member and Past Patron of the Newberry Chapter No. 226, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mr. Gilliam is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby A. and Maree H. Gilliam of Lexington and Ralph and Barbara M. Gilliam of Alpharetta, GA. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris Jean Armfield and a brother, Willie Robert Gilliam.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Day. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was Friday from to 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.

Elizabeth Ballentine Long

Elizabeth Ballentine Long, 94, of 22858 U. S. Highway 76, Newberry, widow of Harold F. Long, died Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Long was born on January 24, 1911, in Lexington County, a daughter of the late John A. and Carrie Corley Ballentine. She was a graduate of Winthrop College Class of 1933 and taught fourth grade in Newberry County Schools for 24 years having taught at Park Street Elementary School in Whitmire, Bush River School in Newberry, O’Neal School in Prosperity, Little Mountain School in Little Mountain, and Hartford School in Newberry. Mrs. Long married Harold F. Long in 1939 and they were married for 52 years. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and received a plaque for the care of the communion set at St. James for 48 years. She was an active participant in the operation of the family farm in the Jalapa community of Newberry, SC, and was recognized for her contributions to agriculture by the Clemson University Extension Service.
Mrs. Long is survived by a daughter, Suzanne E. Long of Columbia; a son, John F. Long of Irmo; a sister, Emma Julia Sease of Newberry; a brother, J. William Ballentine of Newberry; two grandchildren, John Christopher Long of Washington, DC and Emily Maureen Long of Charleston. She was predeceased by three sisters; Mary Lou B. Reeves, Virginia B. Crosson and Gladys B. Long.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev Rodney Gunter. Interment was in the church cemetery.
The family was at the residence, 22858 U. S. Highway 76 and did receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M., Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home

Joseph Fabel Harps
September 8, 2005

Funeral services for Joseph Fabel Harps, Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) of 2454 Chappells Highway, Chappells, SC were conducted 3:00 P.M. Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry and the family did receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday. Graveside services were held on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Kellersville Methodist Church in Kellersville, PA.
Colonel Harps died on September 8, 2005. He was born on May 25, 1918 in Manchester, North Carolina, a son of the late George Allen and Sidney Hesley Harps. He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, the Executive Program of the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago where he received a Master’s of Business Administration.
As a career Army Officer, he was graduated from the Air Tactical School, the Ordinance School, and the Command and General Staff College. His early service was as an Ordinance officer at Morris Field, Columbia Army Air Base, V Air Service Area Command, and the IX Troop Carrier Command. During World War II he participated in the Luzon, New Guinea, and Philippine Liberation campaigns and commanded the 2112th Ordinance Battalion. His other overseas tours of duty included a tour of duty in West Germany and two tours of duty in South Korea. Stateside, he served on the Department of the Army General Staff, the Eighth U.S. Army General Staff, and as an Inspector General of the United States Army. His awards and decorations included the Army General Staff Identification Badge and the Legion of Merit.
Colonel Harps is survived by his wife, Popie Helen Harps, of Chappells, a son, Joseph Patrick Harps, daughter-in-law, Ellenor McCaughrin Harps, a granddaughter, Sidney Hesley Harps, and a grandson, Patrick McCaughrin Harps, all of Alpharetta, Georgia and many others who knew, admired and loved him.

Bertie Ruth Amick Hawkins

Bertie Ruth Amick Hawkins, 96, widow of H. Bates Hawkins, of 1655 Fire Tower Rd. Prosperity, died Saturday, September 3, 2005 at the White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Hawkins was born December 17, 1908 in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Bennett L. and Elizabeth Fulmer Amick. She was the oldest member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and Lula Hunter Circle. She was retired from Old School Manufacturing Co.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by a son, Paul L. (Anne) Hawkins of Prosperity; a brother, Boinest Amick of Prosperity; two grandchildren Pam H. (Harvey) Brown of Lexington and Kent (Bess) Hawkins of Prosperity; and four great-granddaughters, Caitlin Brown and Erica Mathis of Lexington, Mindy Hawkins and Jessica Hawkins of Columbia.
She loved her family and her church. Her hobby was quilting for family and friends.
Funeral services was held Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Lukes Lutheran Church by Rev. Art Hallman. Interment did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family was at the home of Paul and Anne Hawkins, 1619 Fire Tower Road, Prosperity and did receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Azilee Amick Hawkins

Azilee Amick Hawkins, 94, widow of Lawrence Hawkins, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Hawkins was born February 26, 1911, in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Bennett L. and Lizzie Fulmer Amick. She was a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing Company. She was the oldest living member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and the Leisure Club of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by four daughters and two son-in-laws, Dorothy H. Havird, Kathren and James Lee Mills and Mary H. and Mickey Haltiwanger all of Newberry, and Ann H. Metts of Prosperity; a son and daughter-in-law James L. and Elaine S. Hawkins of Newberry; a sister Bertie A. Hawkins of Prosperity, a brother Bonniest Amick of Prosperity; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a grandson, Randy Haltiwanger and two son-in-laws, Edwin D. Havird and Glenn Metts.
Funeral services were conducted 4:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. Charles Aurand and Rev. Floyd Sides. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the home of Dorothy Havird, 2312 Mayes Ave., Newberry, and will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
