William H. “Bill” White, Sr., 82, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, September 18, 2014 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jeff O’Dell.  Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.

Maci Elizabeth Long, baptized child of God and infant daughter of Jared Luther and Kristina Bradley Long, became one of God’s angels on Thursday, September 11, 2014.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 14, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home. 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, at St. James Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Rodney Gunter.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Maci was born August 30, 2014.   This brave little girl was a real fighter who brought so much joy to her family.  She touched many lives in her short period of time, more than many do in an extended lifetime. 

In addition to her parents of Newberry, she is survived by her brother, Hudson Benjamin Long; maternal grandparents, Susan and Jamie Johnston of Prosperity and Randy and Bonnie Bradley of Columbia; paternal grandparents, Luther and Denise Long of Newberry; maternal great grandmother, Florence Bradley of Newberry; paternal great grandparents, Nancy Nichols Long of Newberry and Jerry and Julia Greene of Prosperity; aunts and uncles, Bryan and Julie Long Taylor of Marietta, GA, Christopher Ben Bradley of Charleston, Vanessa Cannon of NJ, Christopher Cannon of Columbia, Jennifer and Josh Lipson of NJ; and cousins, Sarah Kate Taylor, Luke Taylor, Jack Taylor, Ella Lipson and Caroline Lipson.  She was predeceased by great grandparents, Homer F. Long, Ben Bradley, Robert Fraser and Faye Fraser.

Pallbearers will be Bryan K. Taylor, Christopher B. Bradley, Parkes B. Coggins, and John C. Folk.

William E. “Bill” Evans, 92, of Newberry died Tuesday morning at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM on Friday, September 12, 2014 at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Whitesides and the Rev. Audrey Reese.  Military honors will be rendered following the service. 

The family will receive friends at 12 Glenn St. from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday.  Parking is available on the Crescent Street side of the home.

Macey Dylan Nichols, 35, of Newberry, died Thursday, September 4, 2014.

Born on March 27, 1979, he was a son of Michael Keith Nichols of Newberry and Cheryl Lester Reid of Whitmire.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 11:00 AM to 12 noon at Whitaker Funeral Home.    

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Bruce Palmer will follow at 12:30 PM in the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Nichols, 1107 Reid St., Newberry.

Dylan was employed with Cannon Rentals.  Texting with friends and drawing were two of his favorite activities and he had a special love for his nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Bobby and Jean Nichols of Newberry; step mother, Charlene Nichols of Newberry; step-father, Michael Reid of Whitmire; sister, Jessica Michelle Nichols (Cyril Garrett) of Newberry; brother, Joshua Warren (Ghen) Nichols of Newberry; step brothers, Daniel Scott of South Dakota and Sean Scott of Prosperity; nephews, Andrew Bennett, Issac Nichols and Cyril Garrett, II all of Newberry; aunts, Renee (Junior) Parkman and Karen (Steve) Wyatt, all of Newberry and uncle, Buddy (Susan) Lester of Newberry.  He was predeceased by grandparents, Mildred “Totsy” English and Jimmie Lester.   

Memorials are suggested to the Newberry Animal Care and Control, 240 Public Works Dr., Newberry, SC 29108

Patty Sue Spikes

October 7, 1931 - September 2, 2014

Patty Sue Spikes, wife of the late Roy E Spikes, died at Newberry County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, after a brief illness.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Bancroft, LA.   Burial will follow in Spikes Cemetery, also in Bancroft.  Brother Jerry Hext and the Reverend Guy Snyder will officiate.

She was born on October 7, 1931 in Lindale, Georgia but lived in the Bancroft, LA area for over 30 years.  She spent her last 6 years in Batesburg, SC.

Survivors include three sons, Rex A. Spikes of Houston, TX, Frank E. Spikes of Batesburg, SC and Robert E, Spikes of Upland, CA.; two brothers, Harold Craton of Lawrenceville, GA and Karl "Larry" Craton of St. Petersburg, FL.; and loving grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy; two sisters, Natalia Teal and Barbara Louise Craton; and two brothers, Charles and Tom "Crocker" Craton.

Patty lit up the lives of everyone around her.  She was much loved and will be sorely missed by all.

Betty A. McEntire

Betty A. McEntire, 82, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at her residence in Irmo, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00AM, Thursday September 4, 2014 at the Lake Murray Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ben Sloan. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pomaria, SC.   

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, 939 Chapin Rd., Chapin.

Born on January 18, 1932 in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late Ivy Eugene Allen and Ada Richardson Allen.  She moved to Columbia after high school where she met and married the love of her life, the late Hanes A. McEntire.

Betty worked at SC National Bank and the Hearing and Speech Center in Columbia.  She was a founding member of Virginia Wingard Methodist Church in St. Andrews in 1954 and after moving from the St. Andrews area became a devoted member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church where she had many loving and caring friends.  She was active in the Joy circle.

Betty was an avid Gamecock fan, loved flowers, and spending time in the mountains with family.  She was a friend and mother figure to many outside of her immediate family and was referred to as “Grammy” by all who loved her.  Betty will be remembered as a lady who always made others feel special and welcome.  She loved God, her family, her church and her friends with all her heart.

She is survived by her children, Renee McEntire McGinnis of Chapin, and Bartley Hanes McEntire and his wife, Lisa S. McEntire of Lexington.  She is the proud and loving grandmother to four grandchildren, Melissa Renee Rector, Matthew Roy McGinnis (Monica), Marci Taylen McEntire, and Morgan Hanes McEntire; and three great grandchildren, Hannah Renee Rector, Matthew Roy McGinnis, Jr., and Ella Renee McGinnis. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Meetze (Melvin); brother-in-law, John Thomas McEntire; and several loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. 

The family sincerely appreciates the compassionate care of all those who watched over her during her illness especially Blue Ridge Hospice, Care Generations, Dorothy Counts, Lindsey Blevins, and Dr. Carroll Pinner of Pinner Clinic.

The family suggests memorials be made to Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, 2721 Dutch Fork Road, Chapin, SC  29036.
