Obituary for Emmitt B. Sherron, Jr.

Emmitt B. Sherron, 93, of Newberry, died Sunday, December 16, 2018 at his residence in Newberry.

Mr. Sherron was born on October 28, 1925 in Raleigh, NC the son of the late Emmett B. Sherron, Sr. and Eva Mae Smith Sherron.

Emmitt was a U. S. Navy veteran of WW II. He was thankful to come back from the war with all of his fingers and toes. He was a graduate of N.C. State College. After college, he began working as a professional engineer in the air conditioning business in the two Carolinas.

He was a past chapter president and state director of the S.C. Society of Professional Engineers. During that time, he was awarded two patents.

Emmitt enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking and horseback riding. When his career moved him to the St. Louis area with his family and because of his grandson’s involvement, he became very active in the Boy Scouts.

He was active as a Scout Master, Unit Commissioner and Climbing instructor. He was also active in the Etowah Creek District of the Indian Waters Council where he became the Boy Scout Training Chairman for the Etowah Creek District.

During these Scouting years, Emmitt received the following adult volunteer awards: District Award of Merit, Distinguished Commissioner, Silver Beaver Award, and Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. He was presented The Etowah Creek District Lifetime of Service Award on April 14, 2016. At that time, the award was renamed The Emmitt Sherron Lifetime of Service Award.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jean Scarborough Sherron; children, Nancy Sherron of Newberry and Elizabeth Anne Sherron (Gary Gunter) of Saluda; and grandchildren, Adam Sherron and Sarah Gunter.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 PM Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Graveside funeral services with military honors will be conducted at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 11:00 AM Monday, December 24, 2018.

Memorials are suggested to Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America, 715 Betsy Dr. # B6, Columbia, SC 29210.
