Alan Johnstone Paysinger, Sr, 73 years of age, died on Monday, March 8, 2021 at his residence.
Born in Newberry, he was a son of the late Strother Daniel Paysinger, Sr. and Martha Johnstone McCandlish. He graduated from Newberry High School class of 1965 and attended Newberry College.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Alan served as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam War. He was stationed on the USS Essex.
He was Vice President of the Newberry Oil Company and was a third-generation cattle farmer who was immensely proud of his cattle.
He participated in scouting and was very pleased with himself in completing the necessary requirements to attain the honor of Eagle Scout.
Alan was a member St. Luke's Episcopal Church where he served as a Junior Warden.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Janet Ruff Paysinger; children and their spouses, Dr. Alan Johnstone Paysinger, Jr. (Jimmell) of Newberry, Tanya Amaker RN, BSN (Kelly), and Dr. Tina Paysinger all of Greenwood; stepsister, Barbara Clarkson Smith of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren whom he deeply loved, Brittany, Mariah, Braylen, Keith, Lakell, and Alan III.
He is also survived by his aunt, Margery P. Williamson of Newberry; uncle, Benjamin Daniel Paysinger, MD (Mary Louise) of Columbia; sister-in-law, Elizabeth R. Richburg of Lexington; and brother-in-law, Harold Ruff (Marcia) of Newberry.
In addition to his parents, Alan was predeceased by his twin brother, Strother D. Paysinger, Jr., stepmother, Eleanor Wier Paysinger, stepfather, Harrison E. McCandlish, and sister-in-law, Patricia R. Kennerley.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Mother, Mia C. McDowell. The rendering of Military Honors will follow the service.
Serving has honorary pallbearers will be Harold Ruff, Troy Martin, and Lee Nicholson.
