IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allen
Salter
March 23, 1958 – June 6, 2024
James Allen Salter, Jr., 66, of Prosperity, passed away at home Thursday, June 6, 2024, surrounded by his family.
He was born on March 23, 1958, to Barbara Q. and the late James Allen "Hunchy" Salter, Sr., of Wagener. He cherished memories of growing up and working with his grandfather on the family farm. After graduating from James Butler Bonham Academy in 1976, he relocated to Newberry.
In 1981, he met Norma Jones at Haile's Restaurant, where she worked as a waitress and he was a regular. The pair married on March 19, 1983. In 1984, he joined the Department of Operations for the Newberry County School District, from which he retired in 2012 after 28 years of faithful service. After retirement, he put his skills to work for a short time at Hamm Hardware & Building Supplies.
Always a proud and devoted father, he was a member of the Mid-Carolina High School Rebel Regiment Marching Band Pit Crew, where he built show props, moved equipment to and from performances, and cheered his son and his bandmates from the sideline.
Allen was a jack of all trades, having worked in emergency medical services, sales, manufacturing, mechanics, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, highway maintenance, locksmithing and general maintenance, among others. He could fix, build, or drive just about anything.
His passions included cooking, hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, carpentry and motorcycling. He was also a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.
In addition to his wife of 41 years, he is survived by their son, Jay Salter; his mother, Barbara Q. Salter; a sister, Amy (Randy) Schumpert; nieces, nephews, and friends.
Along with his father, he was predeceased by a sister, Ann Young; nephews Jake Schumpert and Dustin Jones; brother-in-law Keith Jones and sister-in-law Beth Hughes; and his dear friend Herb Fulmer.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 14, at Saint Luke's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jason Schafer officiating. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will immediately follow the service at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, the Mid-Carolina High School Band Booster Club, or Saint Luke's Lutheran Church.
