Alma Bates Cotney 92 formerly of Prosperity widow of J. Nelson Cotney died Thursday November 21 2013 at White Oak Manor. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday November 24 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Kierstead the Rev. Randy Derrick and Mr. Thomas Bush. Visitation was at the church from 1:00 to 1:45 PM prior to the service. The family was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson L. Cotney 118 Curtis Court Chapin SC. Mrs. Cotney was born in Prosperity on September 9 1921 a daughter of the late T. Grover and Annie Gordon Bates. She was retired from K-Mart and Greenwood/Joanna Mills and she also served as a Stanley Home Products Dealer. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a founding member of the Lake Murray Rescue Squad. She is survived by her son Nelson L. Cotney (Teri) of Chapin; three grandchildren Barry Cotney and Bryon Cotney both of Chapin and Stephanie Woods of Newberry; four great grandchildren Kristen Cotney Tiffany Cotney and Lindsey Cotney all of Prosperity and Luke Hall of Newberry; and son-in-law Henry Hyler of Prosperity. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her daughter Kim Cotney Hyler. Pallbearers were Toby Shealy Steve Shealy Henry Hyler Jene Woods Thomas Bates and Ronnie Cotney.
