Obituary

Alton Eugene Sutphin, 84, of Newberry, died August 17, 2024, at the VA Dorn Medical Center in Columbia, SC.

Born on July 2, 1940, in Pulaski, VA, he was the son of the late William Jefferson and Mackie Nelson Sutphin.

Alton believed in serving and giving back to his country and community. He served eight years in the United States Air Force and was a proud veteran of the United States Armed Forces. His commitment extended beyond his military service, he was active in the Masons and Shriner's organizations, and he was always willing to promote their causes in parades and activities.

Alton had an appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He enjoyed fishing, music, tending his goats, rabbits, and rosebushes, gardening, and bowling. His greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved wife, Edna "Jimmie" Boland Parnell Sutphin, and family. He was especially fond of time spent with his grandchildren. The annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted by Alton and his wife was a cherished tradition, particularly for the excitement of finding the elusive "Golden Egg." To his friends and family, he was affectionately known to many as Al, Owl, Pop, PapaSun, Papa Smurf, and Grandpa.

He is survived by his step-children: Pat Cagle (Will), David Parnell (Carol), Bill Parnell; Ernie Parnell (Lanette), Vera Duffie (Mike), and Gladys Sligh (Bobby); 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by his seven siblings: Joelene, Harriett, Haven, Lila, Kalima, Garnett, and Niki; step-son, Clifton Parnell; a great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 23, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorials are suggested to Glenn Street Baptist Church, Memorial Fund, 300 Glenn Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Al's care teams at J.F. Hawkins and VA Dorn Medical Center.

Memories and messages may be left for the family on his tribute wall.

Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the Sutphin family.
