Alvin Al Preston Derrick 49 of Chapin died Saturday April 3 2010. Born in Newberry on July 14 1960 he was the son of Bettie Counts Derrick of Little Mountain and the late Louie C. Derrick. Mr. Derrick worked for almost 30 years with SCE&G and prior to that he worked with his family at Derrick Lumber Company. He was also a certified welder and enjoyed helping friends with special projects. He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on many committees. He and his wife co-chaired the youth group for more than 10 years and he also served on the Holy Trinity Church Relay for Life committee. Mr. Derrick was a member of the Little Mountain Masonic Lodge # 281. He was a proud band parent of both the Clemson University Band and the Chapin High School Band where he served as chairman and member of the pit crew. Al loved outdoor activities especially his garden where he grew his famous 14 + foot tomato plant. He loved cooking and was known throughout the county for his gravy which he shared with many friends and family over the years. And recently thanks to his wife he grew to love NASCAR and became a fan of Mark Martin. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends his faithful companion Jake and his two grand-bunnies BooBoo and Booger. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife Kimberly G. Derrick; his children; Breanne Derrick (Jeremy) Burns of Columbia; Ashleigh Brooke Derrick of Clemson and of the home; a sister Clair Derrick Wicker of Chapin; brothers Carroll (Angie) Derrick of Little Mountain Barry (Suzanne) Derrick of Chapin and Barney (Vonda) Derrick of Columbia; a grandmother Naomi Lindler Counts of Chapin; his mother-in-law Rebecca W. Gardner of Newberry; and many loved nieces nephews aunts uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Henry Alvin Counts and Lee Carroll and Louise Copeland Derrick. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Fred Suhr. Interment was in the church cemetery. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapin.Pallbearers were Ray Cumalander Wayne Jackson Mike Whitehurst Bernie Metts Bob Arial Steve Bush Mark Kibler and Bobby Stockman. Honorary pallbearers were Buck Cumalander and J.C. Frick.
