Angelyne Elizabeth
Townsend
June 21, 1930 – October 10, 2022
Angelyne Elizabeth Townsend, 92, of Lexington, SC departed this life Monday, October 10, 2022.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Newberry Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dan Williams of Lexington Baptist Church Main Street officiating.
Born June 21, 1930 in Newberry, South Carolina to the late Peter Cedric Plampin and Kathleen Lee Gilliam, she was the first Homecoming Queen of Newberry High School in 1947.
Angelyne was known to her friends as Buncie. She was known as a great cook. She attended Winthrop College for two years and then married her high school sweetheart Billy G. Harmon a student at Clemson. During this time of "study" their first child Gerry was born. Army Captain and Mrs. Harmon sailed to Europe on the maiden voyage of the SS United States setting a new speed record for Atlantic crossings. While in France their second child Randy was born. Returning to the US and civilian life Buncie and Billy moved back to South Carolina and soon thereafter came their favorite daughter Elizabeth (Libba as we know her). As a young family they moved from up state SC to Georgia to Texas as career promotions occurred. In Georgia, Buncie served as a dietician for the local elementary school. In Texas she was a full-time housewife raising her young family. When Billy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, they moved back to their hometown Newberry and served the community with the help of God, family and friends. Buncie, then expanded her role as a bread winner as a dental assistant and cashier at the local Red and White Food store while providing primary care for her husband. Billy died in November of 73 and Buncie never wavered from God or motherhood. She also went back to college and earned her degree in Special Education at Newberry college and went on to teach at Whitten Village. In 1977 she remarried F.W. Townsend of Jekyll Island, GA. At Jekyll she served the Jekyll Baptist Chapel as a superintendent of Sunday school and vacation Bible School. She taught in the public schools as a substitute teacher and provided private tutoring for special needs children. Oh, in her spare time, she volunteered at the local hospital and played tennis.
Buncie moved to Lexington after the death of FW Townsend in 2015 where she was more able to visit her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren—29 in all. Throughout her life, her driving force was her love for God and family.
She is predeceased by two brothers James (Sonny) Edward Plampin and Philip Eugene Plampin.
Survivors include three children, Gerry Harmon and wife Linda of Georgetown, SC, Randy Harmon and wife Ruthanne of Brentwood, TN, and Elizabeth Blackston and husband Bill of Lexington, SC, seven grandchildren and two deceased, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, October 13, 2022 following the graveside celebration at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lexington Baptist Church 308 E Main St, Lexington, SC 29072; to the staff of Legacy of Lexington 218 Old Chapin Road, SC 29072; or Wellmore of Lexington SNF at 200 Wellmore Drive in Lexington, SC 29072.
