Ann Baxley Bowers

Ann Baxley Bowers, 79, of Little Mountain, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026, at her residence.

Born November 30, 1946, in Columbia, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Marjorie Brown Chitty and John Bunyan Baxley.

Ann was an educator in the truest sense of the word. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Georgia Southern and began her teaching career at Barnwell Elementary School. She later joined Little Mountain Elementary School, where she spent most of her career before retiring after 30 years in the classroom.

For Ann, however, teaching was much more than a career, it was a calling. Her love for children and education continued long after retirement, as she welcomed students into her home for tutoring and continued doing what she loved most: helping children learn and grow. Throughout her career, Ann was honored as Teacher of the Year, was a member of the South Carolina Education Association (SCEA), and served as a Teacher Evaluator, supporting and encouraging fellow educators.

Ann also had a wonderful love of collecting. From figurines and antiques to special keepsakes gathered through the years, her home reflected the things and memories she treasured. She especially enjoyed traveling with Melvin, often seeking out charming local bed-and-breakfasts along the way.

Ann was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin; sons, Lance Still (Melissa) and Steven Still; grandchildren, Wyatt and Landon Still, and Abby, Riley and Avery Still; sisters, Betty Baxley Mise and Marlene Baxley Cadmen; and nieces and nephews, Walker Mise, Lauren Luge, Joseph Mise and Ashley Mise.

In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her stepfather, Wesley D. Chitty Jr., and her beloved grandmother, Gertrude S. Brown.

The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to Phyllis Houston for the exceptional care, kindness and support she provided to Ann.
