Obituary

Anne Owens Clary, 88, widow of Rev. Carl D. Clary, died on May 26, 2018 at The Heritage at Lowman in White Rock, SC. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, SC with the Rev. Joseph D. Flowers Jr., Pastor of Chapin United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive visitors after the graveside service. Born in Clinton, SC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Spencer Owens and Mary Frances Pool Owens. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and Winthrop College, and she did graduate work at the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Clary taught in the high schools of Columbia, Orangeburg, Union, and Spartanburg for a period of 22 years. Mrs. Clary was a member of many United Methodist Churches pastored by her husband and was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church at the time of her death. She was active as a Sunday School Teacher and Bible Study Leader in the women's work and was presented Life Membership in the United Methodist Women. She was a faithful member of the choirs in all of the churches pastored by her husband and also served as counselor to the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Surviving her are her two sons, Carl Douglas Clary Jr. and his wife Susan Cody Clary of Chapin; and Robert Spencer Clary and his wife Suzanne Tisdale Clary of Mauldin. She is also survived by her grandchildren R. Spencer Clary, Jr. of Mauldin, Cameron E. Clary of Charlotte, William D. Clary of Charlotte, Hampton S. Clary of Chapin, S. Caroline Clary of Chapin; her step grandchildren Tyler A. Whitman of Columbia, Keith E. Whitman (Heather) of Lexington; Samantha L. Whitman of Columbia; and her step great grandchildren Natalee R. Whitman of Orangeburg and Trever J. Whitman of Lexington. Mrs. Clary was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bailey Owens Twitty, and brothers, Tench P. Owens and Robert S. Owens, Jr. The family especially wishes to thank the staff of The Heritage at Lowman for their kindness and care of Mrs. Clary over the last 16 months.
