IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anthony (Tony) B.
Vengraitis
October 11, 1937 – June 5, 2025
Anthony (Tony) B. VenGraitis, age 87, passed away on June 5, 2025 in White Rock, South Carolina. Tony was born on October 11, 1937 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He led a good life and radiated warmth and humor that touched everyone who knew him.
Tony graduated Jefferson High School in Elizabeth in 1955, and worked for many years at several local companies as an inventory specialist before he was employed by Warner Lambert in Morris Plains, NJ as a budding computer systems analyst. He excelled at his career, and retired (happily) after 25 years.
Tony was a lover of nature, and spent much of his free time outside, either visiting wildlife sanctuaries in the area, 4H county fairs, or tending to his home garden. His green thumb kept his family well fed with fresh vegetables over the years. He loved his home in Chapin, SC on Lake Murray, as well as his summer cottage in the Pocono Mountains, where he had a menagerie of visiting deer and chipmunks. Tony doted on his cats over the years and often kept other pets such as dogs, rabbits, chickens, and even a squirrel. He also had amazing skills at home and car repairs and could be counted on fixing things with his vast collection of tools.
Tony was a devoted husband to his wife Catherine M. (nee Acquaviva) from their wedding day on May 23, 1959, until her untimely passing on May 17, 1998. During her long illness, he was her constant caregiver and a beacon of strength for those around him in this difficult time. After her passing, Tony found new love with Jean Lunde, and their marriage lasted happily for 20 years, until her sad passing on March 1, 2021. Again, Tony was a source of comfort and care to Jean during her final days. Tony was also preceded in death by his parents Marie and Joseph, and his sister Mary Magnus.
Tony is survived by his two children, Mary Thayer (Evan) of Chapin, SC and Anthony B. Jr.. of Edison NJ.; grandchildren, Sam, Stephen, Catherine, Carl and Christopher; sister, Joan Gunther (Michael), brother Joseph Vengraitis (Cynthia); and great grandchildren, Adelaide, Soren, and Emerson
He is also survived by his stepchildren; Linda Shanabrook (Jed) and Lisa Anderson (Michael) all of Chapin, Arthur Jensen (Mari) of Lexington, and Christine Butler (Deane) of Penn Yan, NY.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Heritage at Lowman who made Tony's life so much better during his last four years. He truly enjoyed the staff in each area that he lived. A special thank you to Jennifer Rich who loved him and laughed with him!
A memorial service will be held on June 19th, 10am at Heritage at Lowman New Life Chapel, 2101 Dutch Fork Road in Chapin SC and on July 18th, 11am at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, 53 Inman Avenue in Colonia, NJ.
