Barry E. Mather of Chapin passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 13, 2021, just shy of his 71st birthday. Born in New London, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Frederick Alden Mather and Marion Mildred Boiselle.
Barry graduated from Old Saybrook High School in 1969, and then began his career as a welding inspector at Electric Boat in Groton, CT. In 1982, he seized the opportunity to trade in the snow shovel for golf clubs, and moved his family to South Carolina, when he was offered a position at the V C Summer Nuclear Power Plant in Jenkinsville. He worked there in various capacities until his retirement at age 65. He was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in January 2012 and fought valiantly until that effort became too much for him. His family was his life's legacy. He enjoyed playing golf with old friends and fishing with new ones. He loved his Red Sox, his Patriots, and the UConn Huskies. Barry chose to align with the University of South Carolina after he moved here (instead of that other team) and enjoyed watching Gamecock football and basketball. Watching baseball was his favorite pastime; he was a couch potato during the Gamecocks run winning back-to-back College World Series titles in 2010 and 2011 and then the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in 2016, spending equal time eagerly cheering for the team and yelling at the TV (something he passed down to his two sons).
Barry is survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Lois M. Barrett of Waterford, CT, now of Chapin; his two sons, Brian and his wife Christy of Irmo, and Bart and his husband Andrew David Sotomayor of New York City; his oldest grandson Skylar Graves and Skylar's parents Carrie and George Ruble of Mesa, Arizona; and Brian and Christy's sons, Bear and Corbin of Irmo. He is also survived by three sisters: Joan (Jean) Michaud of Old Saybrook, CT, Sue (Marvin) Roberts of Norwhich, CT, and Dawn and her partner Kelly Ann Martin of Groton, CT; and his brother, Jim (Sadie) of Port Lucie, FL.
As of now, there is no local service planned. A celebration of his life will be planned in Connecticut sometime in November.
If you knew Barry, you knew that he enjoyed sharing a beer with anybody. So raise a bottle, glass, or stein heavenward, and toast the man sitting at the Irish Pub in the sky. Well done Barry … well done.
Memories and condolences may be shared with Barry's family here on his Tribute Wall.
Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family.
