Ben L. Creed, age 85, of Chapin, died Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. He was born June 30, 1938, in Winston-Salem, NC, the son of the late Henry and Sylvia Burchett Creed. He was married for 64 years to the love of his life, Chris Christy Creed.

Ben was outgoing and kind, had a great sense of humor, and above all, loved his family. He was compassionate, and will be remembered for his love of people. Growing up in North Carolina, he never lost his love of the mountains. He also enjoyed time at the beach and on the waters of Lake Murray, where he and Chris built a house and raised their family.

Ben developed a love of learning while working on his degrees in English Literature at Wake Forest University, graduating in 1960, and continued his education at James Madison University. He was a scholar and student of history and built his career representing publishing companies in support of public and private education. Ben was also an active member of the Log Cabin Readers book study group for twenty years, enjoying the company of other readers.

He was a long-time member of Chapin United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Recently, he and Chris became members of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Loren Breland (Steve) of Chapin; a son, Bennet Creed (Kristi) of Weatherford TX; and grandchildren, Kimberly McMurray (Will), Paul Breland (Becky), Ian Creed, and Elise Creed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Geoff Creed; and a granddaughter, Carolyn Breland.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Hagmaier at 3:00, Sunday, September 10th at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church in Chapin. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family requests that memorials be made to Lake Murray Presbyterian Church or We Care of Chapin.
