Obituary

Betty Summers Westwood, 86, of Newberry, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at her residence. She was affectionately known by her family as "Meemee". Born in Chapin, SC on August 25, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Ollie Bryant Summers and Katie Bertell Haltiwanger Summers. Betty was one of seven children and had many fond memories of her childhood. She was blessed with athletic skills and enjoyed playing basketball while in high school. At the age of 18, she moved to New York where she had the opportunity to work in modeling. She loved playing cards and was an avid reader. She was a devoted member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Her yard was her pride and joy and she spent countless hours tending the shrubs and plants. When in bloom, her azaleas were show stoppers. Betty loved her family and treasured time spent with them, especially Sunday lunches and vacations to the beach. She also enjoyed traveling. Betty was a hard-core Gamecock fan who enjoyed all of the sports. She loved attending Gamecocks' sporting events, especially traveling to out of state games. She worked with Dr. Robert E. Livingston, Jr. and Dr. Robert E. Livingston, III for a number of years. Survivors include her children, Joel Westwood and Benji Westwood (Deedee) of Newberry, and Anna M. Newell (Tres) of Irmo; grandchildren, Austin Westwood of Newberry, Adam Westwood (Sara) of West Va., Mahala Melton of Columbia, and Jamie Newell and Taylor Newell of Florida; a great grandson, Jacob Inman; sisters, Sybil Cousins and Sandra Bryan of Newberry; sister-in-law, Claudette Summers of Harleyville and brother-in-law, Larry Cantrell of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Thomas H. "Tom" Westwood; brother, O'Bryan Summers; sisters, Barbara Siokas, Celia Cantrell and Harriett Summers; and brothers-in-law, Deno Siokas and Ralph Bryan. Funeral services will be held by the Rev. Matthew Titus on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, 4:00 PM at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary Street in Newberry. Visitation will follow from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Westwood home, 26 Hartford Heights Street in Newberry.
