Birtrun Birt Cotney 90 formerly of Prosperity died Saturday December 18 2010 at White Oak Manor. Mr. Cotney was born in Prosperity on August 30 1920 a son of the late Napoleon and Florence Stockman Cotney. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from Winn Dixie. He was a lifetime member of the Lake Murray Rescue Squad a member of Woodmen of the World and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Cotney brought joy to everyone he met. He loved sports activities including Nascar and wrestling and especially loved fishing and his USC Gamecocks. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Earlene Stockman Cotney; three daughters Cheryl Toscano (Chuck) of Columbia Kathy Rish and Sandra Worley (Tommy) all of Prosperity; sister Elizabeth Cohen (Al) of Ninety Six; brother J.D. Cotney of Newberry; grandchildren Michael and Jamie Rish Stacy Boland Regina Harris and Zander Cotney; three step-grandchildren Frances Palma Timothy Toscano and Charles Decker; 6 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his son Charles Lanier Cotney; sisters Virginia Shealy Etta Mae Dominick and Ruby Huffstetler; and brothers Nelson Virgil Lee Boyd Troy and Ewell Cotney. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 PM Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Kierstead and Rev. Randall Derrick. The casket was placed in the church at 12:30 PM. Interment was in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Pallbearers were Jamie Rish Michael Rish Stacy Boland Zander Cotney Dean Cotney Harvey Boland and Melvin Dominick. Honorary pallbearers were Toby Shealy Steve Shealy Lee Foster Oscar Bowers and members of the Lake Murray Rescue Squad.
