C. A. Dufford Jr. M.D. 83 of Springfield Place Newberry died Monday January 24 2005 at his residence.Dr. Dufford was born July 10 1921 in Kingstree South Carolina a son of the late C. A. Dufford Sr. and Alma Cole Dufford. He was a 1942 graduate of Newberry College and entered the US Army. Under an Army program he received his medical degree with a specialization in pediatrics from The Medical College of South Carolina in 1945. After serving in his medical capacity in the army in Japan he returned to complete a medical residency in Newark New Jersey and the old Columbia Hospital. Dr. Dufford began his practice in pediatrics in Newberry in 1950 and practiced until January 1997. In 2003 The Dufford Playground located on the front lawn of Newberry County Memorial Hospital was dedicated in honor of the "Baby Doctor" and his 50 years of service to the community's children. "I'm the only person I know who got paid to play. I love those kids" Dufford once said. Dr. Dufford was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry The Newberry County Medical Society and The Country Club of Newberry.A life-long supporter and friend of Newberry College Dr. Dufford served as a member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees for 23 years from 1954 until 1977. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree in 1998 from his alma mater. Dr. Dufford was also active in athletics at Newberry College where he helped establish the Indian Club and served as team physician from 1954 until 1998. In his honor his friends established the C. A. Dufford Jr. athletic scholarship in 1995. In July 1995 the Dufford siblings (Dr. C. A. Dufford Jr. Virginia Dufford Doris Dufford and Dr. W. E. [Bill] Dufford) donated their family home to the College.Dr. Dufford is survived by his sister Doris Dufford of Newberry and a brother Dr. William E. (Bill) Dufford of Columbia. He was predeceased by a sister Virginia Dufford.Visitation will be Tuesday January 25 at the Dufford Alumni House Newberry College Campus from 5:30 until 7:30 pm.Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday January 26 at A. G. D. Wiles Chapel on the Newberry College campus by the Reverend Steve Counts pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry and the Reverend Dr. Beverly Aurand Newberry College pastor. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
