Obituary

Charles Edward Leopard, 100, a beloved resident of Newberry, SC, died Sunday, August 3, 2025 at White Oak Manor. Born on December 16, 1924, he was a son of the late Alford Solomon Leopard and Elizabeth Bouknight Leopard. He was the devoted husband of the late Lila Mae McCartha Leopard.

Charles lived a full and dedicated life of service to his family, faith, and community.

He found immense joy and solace in his faith as a lifelong member of West End Baptist Church. He served with dedication as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher, fostering spiritual growth and community among his peers. His love for God was evident in his warm presence and heartfelt service.

Charles enlisted in the Army after high school and proudly fought and served his country during World War II, Charles served his country in the Army and was a talented musician in the 246 Army National Guard Band for eight years. His patriotism was further honored in 2011 when he participated in a Veterans Honor Flight to Arlington Cemetery and had the experience to visit other military memorials.

In his professional life, Charles devoted himself to the Newberry City Fire Department, serving as a respected and admired Captain. His commitment to protecting his community was recognized with numerous awards, most notably the Golden Deeds Award in 1976. His tenure with the fire department was marked by courage and camaraderie, and he treasured the bond with his fireman team.

A true outdoorsman at heart, Charles found peace and joy in fishing and hunting. He delighted in cooking for family gatherings, holidays and cherished the moments shared with loved ones. Charles's dedication and legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

Charles is survived by, his son, Toby Martin (Connie); grandchildren, Tina Martin Knight (Todd) and Eddie Martin (Danielle) and his great grandchildren, Cash Knight, Devin Ardeljan, and step great granddaughter, Anna Knight.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his siblings, Floyd Leopard, Curtis Leopard, Harold Leopard, Herman Leopard, Nathan Leopard, Eula Mae L. Robertson and Louise L. Davis.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday August 11, 2025, at West End Baptist Church, 617 Main Street, Newberry, SC, 29108.

The family will receive friends for visitation, Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00PM at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Martin, Todd Knight, Craig Kesler, Earl Dominick, Tim Berry, Cash Knight and Devin Ardeljan.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Newberry County Fire Department, West End Baptist Church Sunday School Class, past and present Deacons of West End Baptist Church; as well as John and Cindy Franklin, Bud Cockrell and Bill Braswell.
