Obituary

Charles Copeland "Cope" Veronee, passed into the kingdom of heaven on 16th of June, 2016. He passed away peacefully in his sleep with Evelyn Vernoee, his wife of 63 years by his side. Born in Summerville, SC on June 27, 1915 to Charles Copeland Veronee, Sr. and Emilie Lucille Soubeyroux Veronee, he studied music at Newberry College and was a founding member of the Newberry College Inn Band. His education, however, was cut short by the onset of World War II. Corporal Veronee served as a medic in the United States Army. He participated in both the New Guinea and Philippine Campaigns in the Pacific Theater. An accomplished jazz drummer, Cope played in numerous swing bands over the years, including stints with NBC Staff band in Philadelphia, with Glen Miller in the Army, the Paul LaRosa band and countless others. Cope played drums well into his 90s. He was recognized by Newberry College in 2006 as the "Oldest Active Jazz Drummer in the United States." He also worked at Pet Dairy for over 20 years. Cope is survived by his wife, Evelyn Stone Veronee; his daughter and son-in law: Jeanne Veronee Keith and Colonel (USAF Retired) Edmond Keith; three grandchildren: EM1 (USN) Barry Keith and his wife Ashlye Keith, Matthew Copeland Keith, and Sarah Keith: and two great grandchildren: Liam and Kaylyn Keith. He was predeceased in death by his brother, Jack Veronee. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. The funeral will be held at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry, South Carolina on Saturday, the 2nd of July at 1pm., with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 noon on Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home, prior to the service . The family requests that donations be made to Newberry College Music Department or Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC.
