Obituary

Charles Wayland Gilliam Sr. 70 of 118 ODell St Whitmire died April 1 2011 at his home. He was born on March 4 1941 in Lee County VA a son of the late James Cornell and Adie Mae Hurd Gilliam. He was also the step son of the late Virginia Garman Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam was retired from Georgia Pacific. He was a master carpenter someone who could fix anything and was always willing to help anyone he met or knew. He enjoyed working as a gunsmith and was a master chef for his family and others. Most importantly Mr. Gilliam was a great daddy a loving grandfather and a beautiful husband. He was a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church in Whitmire; and a member of Little Mountain Masonic Lodge #281 where he served two times as Worshipful Master. Mr. Gilliam is survived by his wife Barbara Jean Cooper Gilliam; daughters Charlene Nichols and husband Mike of Newberry and Darlene Baxley and husband Russell of Newberry; sons Christopher Wayland Gilliam of Whitmire and Rev. Tony W. Dickert and wife Lenora of Whitmire; a brother Danny Gilliam and his wife Lynn of Little Mountain; eleven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son Charles Wayland Gilliam Jr. sister Sadie Dickert and brother L. E. Gilliam. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday April 3 2011 at 2:00 PM at Central Avenue Baptist Church Whitmire by the Rev. Wako Cotney and Rev. Todd Johnson. Interment with Masonic rites was in Whitmire Cemetery. The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday at Central Avenue Baptist Church. Active pallbearers were Joshua Dickert James Moe Harris Daniel Garland Scott Dickert Ryan Gilliam and Joshua Rowe. Honorary pallbearers were John Roche Mike Nichols and Russell Baxley. The family suggests memorials be made to Central Avenue Baptist Church P.O. Box 133 Whitmire SC 29178. On line condolences may be sent to the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
