Funeral service for Charlotte S. Kohn was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday August 10 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church 1715 Bull Street Columbia SC 29201 with burial following in Prosperity Cemetery Prosperity SC. On August 6 2011 surrounded by loved ones Charlotte Schroeder Kohn died peacefully in her home from complications resulting from lung cancer. Born in Charleston in 1921 daughter of Julius E. and Lula M. Schroeder Mrs. Kohn graduated from Memminger High School with honors in 1937 and finished Newberry College magna cum laude in 1941 with an A.B. degree in Music. After teaching English and Chorus at Union High School Mrs. Kohn was a professional piano teacher for 35 years. She served in various offices including the presidency of the Columbia Piano Teachers' Association as well as other community music groups such as the Symphony League and the Morning Music Club an organization she helped found. In addition to being a professional musician Mrs. Kohn was a gifted artist who specialized in portraits. Sharing her talents with St. Paul Lutheran the church in which she was a member of the choir for fifty-three years taught Sunday School and formed a prayer group Charlotte Kohn designed the chancel needlepoint kneelers. Mrs. Kohn's primary focus in life was always her close-knit family. She was predeceased by a son Alan S. Kohn who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968. She is survived by her husband Hal Kohn; children Carol Kohn Montgomery (Bob) of Newberry Melanie Kohn Day (Roland Karnatz) of Richmond VA Michael Kohn (Jane) of West Columbia; grandchildren Sean Montgomery (Kathy) Heather Montgomery Kaikini (Shyam) Joel Kohn (Jennifer) Marta Summer Kohn Harding (Josh) Jocelyn Kohn and Morgen Kohn; and great-grandchildren Jake Montgomery Jackson Montgomery Bose Kaikini Asha Kaikini and Reid Kaikini. Charlotte Kohn loved flowers all her life and she also had a special place in her heart for her church St. Paul Lutheran; for animals as she supported the Humane Society 121 Humane Lane Columbia SC 29209; and for direct personal outreach as expressed in her support of Columbia's Salvation Army 2001 Assembly Street Columbia SC 29201.
