Claire Caughman Whitaker Walker, 77, of Augusta, Georgia, died on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on September 29, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Essie Caughman and Roy Doggett Whitaker, Sr. In 1951, when her father began Whitaker Funeral Home, she and her family moved to Newberry, where she spent her childhood.
Claire was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She was selfless and giving, friendly and kind.
She graduated with a degree in finance from the University of Georgia. She then married Mark, her husband of 54 years, and they built a life and family together. Her most significant role was that of mother, raising their two children.
Claire worked for 25 years at the Savannah River site in Aiken, SC as an administrator within the site’s laboratory. She also worked for several years within the Columbia County school system while her children were younger.
She was a collector of many of life’s finer things and found joy in learning their history. She also treasured simple things like the peace and quiet found at the beach or in the mountains.
Claire is survived by her husband, Mark J. Walker; son, Jonathan Walker (Justine); grandchildren, Evelyn, Grace, and Lily Walker; and her brother, R. Doggett Whitaker, Jr. (Christie).
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Matthew Titus at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 10, 2026 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Thursday, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Memorials are suggested to The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary St., Newberry SC 29108.
Memories and messages may be shared on her tribute wall.
Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Claire Whitaker Walker.
