Colie Merle Metts, 84, of Columbia Street, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Conway Medical Center.
Mr. Metts was born in Little Mountain, SC, a son of the late Colie S. and Juanita Watts Metts. He was a 1949 graduate of Little Mountain High School. Mr. Metts was a graduate of SC Highway Patrol Training School and numerous specialized training courses. He served as a State Trooper with most of his service in the North Myrtle Beach and Conway areas of Horry County. Sgt. Metts retired in 1991 after 38 years service. Through the years Sgt. Metts received many commendations for outstanding service. He was a member of South Carolina Troopers Association, Life Member Grand Strand Masonic Lodge #392, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. Sgt. Metts was also a member of the Omar Shriners, Omar Chefs, member and Past President of Waccamaw Shrine Club, and Life Member and Past President of MLC Shrine Club. He enjoyed his early childhood experiences on the farm which contributed to his love of gardening, fishing and hunting. One of his greatest joys was spending time at their beach house in Cherry Grove and having fish fries. He enjoyed gardening and sharing produce from his garden with neighborhood friends. Sgt. Metts enjoyed traveling and together with his wife, made many trips throughout the US and because of his love of the water, they enjoyed numerous cruises. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry W. Metts.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years of marriage, Joyce Aughtry Metts of Conway; two sisters, Jeannette M. Fulmer and husband James B. Fulmer of Prosperity, SC and Deborah M. Crider of Florence, SC; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Aughtry of Newberry, SC and Linda S. Metts of Chapin, SC; and special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who loved him dearly.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Weidman, Jr. and Rev. Lee Singleton officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery in Little Mountain, SC at 3:30 on Saturday.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Saturday at the church.
