Obituary

Colin Ray Hawkins, Jr., 91, of Columbia, died Sunday, August 28, 2022 at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital. Born on September 26, 1930 in Stoney Hill, he was a son of the late Collin Ray Hawkins, Sr. and Artie Irene Taylor Hawkins. Ray was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in Germany during the Korean War. After his service in the Army, he worked for the Joanna Mills. Later he began his career in the Heating and Air Conditioning business where he ultimately retired. He was a musically-talented person and had a special passion for playing the guitar and mandolin. Ray loved "old" country music and took advantage of every opportunity to play it or to watch it on RFD-TV. He loved sharing his talent with others, joining with others to share music at the Community Center and local nursing homes. Ray was easy to talk to and was always willing to listen. He thought of others first and will be remembered as a simple person who loved his church, loved his family, loved his 'chew', and loved his music. Ray was always fun and always kind. He is survived by a son, Wyman Hawkins of Columbia; grandchildren, Justin Hawkins (Courtney) of Whitmire and Rachel Hawkins Weatherford (Justin) of Prosperity; great-grandsons, Jaxon Hawkins and Baylor and Cason Weatherford; and a daughter-in-law, Becky Ashley Thompson (Johnny) of Chapin. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Patricia "Patsy" Crowder Hawkins; a son, Michael Ray Hawkins; siblings, Majel Wicker, Bernice Connelly, Mertie Connley, and Reuben Hawkins. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Jason Schafer at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 AM. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, A/V Fund, 4056 St Luke's Church Rd, Prosperity, SC 29127. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family here on his tribute page. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the Hawkins family.
