Conrad Ballentine Park 91 of White Rock SC died Saturday November 27 2010 at The Heritage at Lowman. Dr. Park was born on November 6 1919 in Kannapolis NC the son of the late Rev. George Henry Calvin Park and Mary Ina Ballentine Park. He graduated magna cum laude from Newberry College in 1941 and later earned a Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Bachman Honor Society at Newberry College and Chi Beta Phi a National Honorary Science Fraternity. During his career Dr. Park was a research chemist with the Texas Company in Port Arthur Texas and a Professor of Chemistry at Carthage College Lenoir-Rhyne College and at Newberry College. While at Newberry College he was the first Academic Dean and also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs Acting President and Chairman for the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Upon his retirement in 1985 he was named Professor Emeritus by Newberry College. In 2007 Dr. Park was awarded the Newberry College Sesquicentennial Medal of Honor. His involvement with youth included Project Love with fourth-graders at Chapin Elementary School teaching stamp collecting for several years; the Boy Scouts of America; church youth groups and college clubs and fraternities. His memberships in professional organizations included the Southern Association Conference of Academic Vice Presidents and Deans; the National Lutheran Conference of Academic Deans serving as President; the American Chemical Society; Sigma Xi; and Chi Beta Phi National Science Fraternity in which he served as Newberry Chapter adviser and National President Secretary and Treasurer. He was a member and officer of Lutheran Brotherhood Branch 81; member and officer of Newberry Kiwanis Club; member of the Board of Trustees for United Way; member of Board of Trustees of the Lowman Home for more than 10 years; a charter member and director of the Mid-Carolina Country Club; and member of the Mid-Carolina Senior Golf Association of which he was the founder and longtime secretary-treasurer organizing tournaments and outings. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church White Rock. As a long time member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry he served on numerous committees and as a Sunday School teacher choir member delegate to SC Synod conventions and church council member and officer. Dr. Park is survived by his wife of 67 years Dorothy Barton Park of White Rock SC; sons Dr. George Bennet Park and wife Rosa Fang of Columbia SC and David Conrad Park and his wife Debra Roberts Park of Charlotte NC; daughter Dr. Dorothy Johanna Park of Columbia SC; grandchildren Karen Elizabeth Park and partner Lisa Transiskus Park of East Point GA George Matthew Park and wife Celina of Cumming GA Emily Ellen Park Libke and husband Greg of Fort Mill SC David Clay Park of Charlotte NC Michael James Park of Burke VA Julia Giovanna Park of Boston MA Bryan Edward Jehlen of Columbia SC; daughters-in-law Jennifer Wilson Park of West Columbia SC and Rosanna Andolfo Park of Burke VA; great-grandchildren Dylan Jameson Park and Joseph Matthew Park of Cumming GA and Abbie Marie Libke of Fort Mill SC; brother the Rev. Dr. Harold Franklin Park and wife Betty of White Rock SC. He was predeceased by sons the Rev. James Barton Park and Lt. Col. Charles Albert Park; brother the Rev. Karl Monroe Park and sister Rachel Park Laughlin. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church White Rock by the Rev. Brett Collins. Burial was at 1:30 PM in the Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry SC. Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Monday in the Hoefler Gallery at The Heritage at Lowman. The family also did receive friends at Rosemont Cemetery following the committal service. Pallbearers were Matt Park Clay Park John Laughlin Fred Park Greg Mole Bryan Jehlen and John Park.
