Obituary

Curtis G Condra Jr, Jerry, was born October 14, 1937 in Bartlett, Texas to parents Curtis and Margaret Fitch Condra. He grew up in Ft Worth, Texas where he graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1955.Jerry married Reba Nell Fagan of Ft Worth in 1956. The couple had four children: Jerry, Todd,Gregg, Tara, and most would say Gracie, his devoted dog. He would tell you he was blessed to have son in law Jon Brockman, daughters in law Cara Ledlie Condra and Cyd Durrett Condra as well as brother-in-law Don Fagan and partner Kruan in his life. Jerry was a devoted grandfather to Geremy Condra with his wife Cindy Krafft, Justin and Megan Elizabeth Carey as well as Cameron and Jack Condra. Jerry and Reba's retirement to Irmo, South Carolina was largely to be able to see them on a daily basis. Jerry and his family crisscrossed the country over the years while working his way through his broadcasting career. He started in radio and worked his way into television. He performed nearly every task that contributed to those disciplines over the course of time to include operating remote radio transmitters and literally turning the power on and off during the course of the broadcast day. He wrote, produced and recorded commercials for on airplay. He was a "Disc Jockey" or DJ when that was something akin to being in show business. Jerry was a newsman early on, careening through the streets of Dallas and Ft Worth in a mobile news unit that looked like something between a hearse with long whip antennas and the Batmobile. When Jerry moved to television as its influence expanded he was an afternoon kids show host complete with cowboy hat, badge, vest and holster. He was a weatherman, a sportscaster, a cameraman, a news anchor, a news director, a television station manager and tv station shareholder. This journey started in Ft Worth and had many ports of call to include: KCUL and KXOL radio (Ft Worth), KRBC tv (Abilene), WNYS tv (Syracuse), KQTV tv (St Joseph), KOVR tv (Sacramento), KEVN tv (Rapid City), KVUE tv (Austin), WPDE tv (Florence), KZZB FM (Beaumont), and a second tour of duty to KQTV tv (St Joseph) where he signed off from on air broadcasts for his final time. Jerry attained his BS in Human Resources Management in 1993 and his MS in Management in 1999, both from Friends University. He used these credentials to move towards his lifelong goal of teaching. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Broadcasting at the State University Of New York at Oswego (SUNY); Jerry was able to use his forty five years of "in the trenches" radio and television experiences to help young aspiring broadcasters into the future of communications. It was from this post that he was able to meet some of his most important and lifelong goals of: continuing to identify promising new talent, and sharing the rich history of communications; all the while walking into that future with them. One of his favorite vehicles for that was the SUNY Oswego Media Summit, a collaborative effort, which brought industry leaders, on air talent and students together. Jerry and Reba were married 62 years; till death did they part in 2018. He was a lifelong learner who loved to teach. Jerry's greatest sources of joy were his family, colleagues like Bill Avery, Fritz Messere, Marci Christensen Burdick, and students. He was one of a kind and the last of a breed. Jerry had a voice made for radio, a smile that used his entire face, and a laugh larger than Texas. Memories and messages of comfort may be left for the family here on Jerry's tribute wall. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family.
