David Beam Summer Sr. 81 of Newberry son of the late Robert Earl Summer and Lucille Beam Summer and husband of the late Kathleen Mims Summer died Wednesday at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday December 4 2015 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer conducted by the Rev. Matthew Titus. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday December 3 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. David was born on July 25 1934 in Newberry. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1952 where he was a member of the football team that played in the Paper Bowl in Canton NC. He graduated from The Citadel in 1956 with a degree in Business Administration and following graduation joined the US Navy serving from 1956 to 1960 achieving the rank of LT.JG. Upon returning to Newberry he joined Summer Insurance Agency as a partner working with his father and brother Robert E. Summer Jr. He worked his entire career there. Mr. Summer was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he served as a former chair of the church council and taught Sunday School for a number of years. He also served on the Board and as chairman of the Board of Newberry Academy and was a founding member of the Carolinian Society. David enjoyed hunting and golfing but his favorite pastime was being a weekend farmer. Mr. Summer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lucille S. and Robin Hefka of Mt. Pleasant; son David B. Summer Jr. of Columbia and daughter-in-law Anne F. Summer of Charleston and son William C. Summer II of Louisville KY; grandchildren David Beam Summer III (Elisabeth) Emily Newman Summer Margaret Louise Hefka Frances Elizabeth Hefka Robert Riford Hefka William Riley Briggs Summer and Robert Davis Summer; siblings Robert E. Bobby Summer Jr. of Newberry and Laura S. Dominick of Prosperity; sister-in-law Nancy Louise Roland (Ronald) of Charleston and beloved nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be George Franklin Bill Parr Robert Summer Bryan Derrick Robert Livingston David Beam Summer III Robert Riford Hefka and William Riley Briggs Summer.
