David Haskell Willingham, age 77, of Prosperity, crossed life’s finish line on March 27, 2026 in Columbia, SC.
Born March 12, 1949 in Newberry, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas Harry and Margaret Franklin Willingham.
Haskell’s passion was racing. From the age of 15 through the late-1980’s, he raced stock cars. His racing career included regional driving for Marion “Preacher” Cox, completing an incredible 18 wins in 1968. Ultimately, he competed in the NASCAR Busch Series for Shugart Racing in 1986 and 1987, driving the #90 Buick stock car. After his driving career, he became a pit crew chief, staying involved in the world of racing that he loved until his retirement.
Away from the track, you would find him at Willingham’s Auto Tune-Up, the automotive shop turned race shop he owned and operated on Broad River Road in Columbia. Even if there was nothing to do, he would never miss a day at the shop.
Outside of racing and automotive work, Haskell enjoyed life on Lake Murray, fishing and spending time with family whenever possible.
He is survived by his son Brent Willingham (Megan) of Prosperity; a sister, Alane Eleazer (George) of Ridgeway, SC; and a brother, Mike Willingham (Emily) of Columbia; grandchildren Brianna, Brooke, Katelyn, and Greyson; great granddaughters Adrianna and Margo.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donnie Willingham.
A Gathering to honor Haskell’s life will take place at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, 4:00-6:00 PM, with a special time of remembering at 5:30 PM.
