Donald A. Brown, Sr. 78, of Newberry, died on Sunday morning, December 18, 2016 at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Born on April 11, 1938 in Charleston, SC, he was a son of the late Robert Horres Brown, Sr. and the late Beatrice Deirs Brown Miller. Don was a graduate of St. Andrews High School and a graduate of Clemson University 1965 Class of Forestry. He served in the SC National Guard for a number of years and in 2000 retired from Georgia Pacific Corporation following thirty-five years of employment. Don was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was very active within his profession as well as within his community. He was a SC tree farm owner; a charter member of the South Carolina Forestry Association where he previously served as a board member; a past board member of the Newberry Forestry Association; was named the 1980 Outstanding Clemson Forestry Alumnus; was a past board member of BB&T Bank and past president of the Sertoma Club. He also served as a Cub Scout leader and as Boy Scout leader of Troup 222. Hunting, fishing, doing anything outdoors were among his favorites pastimes and without doubt he enjoyed his membership in the Midstate Quail and Dove Club. But family was what he considered his treasure and he loved each of them dearly. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lana Orendorff Brown; sons, Donnie (Janna) Brown of Newberry and Jacob Brown of Clemson/Seneca; granddaughter, Caroline Grace Brown; brother, Robert Horres Brown, Jr. (Marie) of Bowman; niece, Alicia Walker of Charleston and nephew, Michael V. Altman (Julie) of Atlanta. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Maree Brown Walker and Mattie Sohl and nephew, Bernard Wesley Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 21 at Central United Methodist Church in Newberry conducted by the Rev. David Surrett. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 20 from 5:00 until 6:30 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College St., Newberry, SC. Pallbearers will be Michael Mills, Mike Manell, Mike Britt, James Kesler, Kevin Clamp, Brian Franklin and Earl Alford. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Midstate Quail and Dove Club.
