Obituary

Dorothy Rita (De George) Fiorentini, 89, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 24, 2021. Her final moments were spent with her loved ones in her usual weekend routine of Saturday evening Mass followed by dinner out at a favorite restaurant. While her passing was unexpected, she was surrounded by loving family throughout her last days. Dorothy was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 27, 1932 to the late Charles and Rose (Carrere) De George. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School and worked for several years as an administrative assistant. Dorothy married the love of her life, Vincent Anthony Fiorentini, on December 26, 1963. Family was an important part of Dorothy's life. Their home in Yeadon, PA was the hub of their extended family for Saturday evening gatherings and card games, and Sunday Italian dinners. They moved from Yeadon to Columbia, SC, in 1995 to be near their daughter, Linda, and family. Dorothy and Vincent were active in their church community together until Vincent's passing in November, 1999. Dorothy continued this involvement at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church until the present day, enjoying weekly Mass as well as fellowship with the Pacesetters Senior Ministry. She was very social and loved lunches out with friends. When Vincent's health deteriorated she learned to drive at age 65 so she could continue to care for him and get him to his appointments. Dorothy's greatest joy came from time spent with her daughter and family. Her daughter, Linda was her best friend, and they started every day with a phone call, as well as many, many shopping excursions, relaxing dinners, boating on Lake Murray, and family trips. Her grandsons were her pride and joy and she stepped in to help take care of them every chance she had. The boys have been blessed to have a Mom-Mom who made them the center of her world. She expanded this family to include her fur granddaughter, Cocoa 12 years ago. No one else in the family ever received the same frantic barking "hello" that Mom-Mom was welcomed with every time she visited. Dorothy is survived by her loving daughter and son in law, Linda and Andrew Donato of Chapin, SC; grandsons Nicholas P. Donato and Brandon V. Donato; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, and her seven siblings, Joseph, Mary, Eleanor, Margaret, Rose Marie, Charles, and Elizabeth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday, October 30, 2021, by Rev. Dennis B. Willey at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10am that same morning, and the family will receive friends prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 195 Amicks Ferry Road, Chapin, SC. 29036. If you would like to leave the family a message of condolence or a memory of Dorothy, you may do so on her tribute wall. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family.
