Barry Stuart Sidenberg, M.D., Col US Army (Ret), of Prosperity, age 74, died Monday, January 25, 2016 at Agape Hospice House in Columbia, SC. Born on July 30, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Dr. Stanley S. Sidenberg and the late Carolyn Moore Sidenberg. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Miami University of Ohio in 1963 and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1966. He was a Board Certified General Surgeon. Following medical school, Barry volunteered for military service, joining the Special Forces as a Green Beret. His deployments included Vietnam, Grenada and Gulf War I (Desert Storm). During his military career, he served as Division Surgeon of the 82nd Airborne, Command Surgeon of the First Special Operations Command, Airborne and Chief of Surgery at Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Ft. Jackson. He was awarded numerous badges, medals and citations including the Combat Medical Badge and the Bronze Star. He retired from the US Army in 1996 with the rank of Colonel. He was a lifetime member of Special Forces Association Chapter 34. Following retirement from the US Army, Dr. Sidenberg practiced medicine in Newberry, SC and concluded his career with the Indian Health Service, serving the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico. He is survived by his wife, Ginny Mills Boland; son, Daniel H. Sidenberg of Boca Raton, FL; daughter, Jennifer Phillips Snidow (Chris) of Reno, NV; grandson, James Byron "Jay" Phillips, IV. of Reno, NV; step-children and grandchildren, Kristina Hanson (John) and their children Will and Eric Hanson; Lori Boland Zurn (Rick) and Wesley (Wanda) Boland and their children Abby and Robert Boland. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 7:00 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:30 until 6:30 pm. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
