Dr. George Lynn Derrick of Newberry died Saturday July 5 2014 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 AM Tuesday July 8 2014 at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry SC by the Rev. Richard Webber. Interment were at Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery White Rock SC. Visitation were from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at the home 5607 Mt. Bethel Garmany Rd Newberry. He was born February 13th 1932 in Columbia S.C. and died at his farm July 5th 2014. He was the son of late Pearle Derrick Kirby and the late Curtis E. Derrick and was reared by his mother and late stepfather J. Manley Kirby after the premature death of his father. Dr. Derrick was educated in the Columbia city schools and was president of the student body of Columbia High school. His Army Reserve Unit the 450th Ord. Ammo Co was among the first units to be activated for the Korean War. He was discharged a corporal from the 20th Combat engineers attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. Following he attended the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Honor Council and the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During those years he was Bill Clerk of the SC State Senate. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of South Carolina where he also interned. Afterwards he was engaged in Family Practice in Columbia for several years before returning to Charleston for his residency in Ophthalmology. He was appointed a Teaching Fellow his senior year and following he attended Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital where he served a Clinical Fellowship in Ophthalmology. Returning to Columbia in 1966 he was a founder of Columbia Eye Clinic where he practiced until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Derrick was a member of many professional service and social organizations. He was a Diplomat in the American Board of Ophthalmology a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the International College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Richland Sertoma Club for more than 20 years and a former member of Forest Lake Club. He was a life-long Lutheran and served as teacher choir member and church council member. He will also be remembered for his medical services overseas. As a member of Project Hope in 1968 he served on Ship HOPE in Ceylon (Sir Lanka) with a team to help upgrade eye cataract surgery in Asia. He is noted to have demonstrated cataract extraction using Freon a corncob and a nail. With the International Eye Foundation he was assigned to the island nation Granada after the United States intervention to relieve the Cuban doctors at the Fort Rupert Eye Hospital. He did short term medical service in Haiti and Anguilla. He lectured at the University of Cairo. He is survived by his wife Susan Hazel Derrick of the home in Newberry a son George Lynn Derrick Jr. and daughter Dr. Katherine Laine (Kappy) Steck both of Columbia. His grandchildren include George Lynn (Tripp) Derrick III of New York NY Charles McKenzie Derrick of Barrington IL Robert Edward (Trace) Cannon and Adelaide Grace (Addie) Cannon both of Columbia. He was predeceased by his brother the Rev Dr. Curtis Derrick Jr and grandson Michael Gleason Derrick. Active pallbearers were Curtis Derrick III Conrad Derrick Carl Derrick Trace Cannon George Lynn Tripp Derrick III Chris Hazel Jordan Floyd and Charles Derrick. The Physicians of The Columbia Eye Clinic are honorary pallbearers.
