Obituary

Edna Workman Ringer, 95, of Newberry, widow of John W. "Bill" Ringer, died April 4, 2018. Born June 28, 1922, in Newberry, she was the daughter of the late Pinckney Clair and Margaret Young Workman. Mrs. Ringer was a graduate of Bush River High School and Newberry College, where she played basketball on the women's team before it was an official women's sport. She was a member of Bush River Baptist Church for her first 26 years. She was a current member of Newberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sabbath School for more than 50 years, sang in the choir, and held various offices within the Women of the Church. A devoted public school teacher for 30 years, she spent the last 23 years of her career teaching first graders at Speers Street Elementary School in Newberry. She could remember every student's name years after they had graduated and started families of their own, and was always proud of their accomplishments. Even after retirement, she remained active and held office in the Newberry County Teachers Association. Her greatest achievement and joy was her family. She was devoted to her beloved Bill, her children, grandchildren, and her nine brothers and sisters and their families. Nothing gave Edna more pleasure than to have all the people she loved together and never missed an opportunity for a reunion or family get-together. She is survived by her sons: Bob Ringer and his wife Jo Ringer of Columbia and Edisto Beach, and Charlie Ringer and his wife Vicki Jinnette Ringer of Lexington. Son Billy Clair Ringer is deceased. She was "Granny" to grandson Will Ringer (Andi) and great-grandchildren Rion, Lily and Ben, all of Columbia. She was "Gaggy" to granddaughter Sally Ringer, also of Columbia. She was the best grandmother no matter the name, and loved her "chaps" unconditionally and spoiled them completely, as was her right. She is survived by sisters Jean (Mac) Epting and Ann (Earl) Penn, both of Cayce, and brothers Tom (Edith) Workman of Newberry and Ned (Liz) Workman of Spartanburg. She was preceded in death by siblings Richard (Carolyn) Workman, Margaret Workman (Roy) Lyles, Mary Claire Workman (Sam) Shannon, Elizabeth "Boo" Workman (Jake) Arant, and Jack (Elinor) Workman. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored as her own. They know who they are. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Newberry ARP Church, 1701 Main St., Newberry. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery.
