Obituary

Edward Ellabe Summer of Chapin, died Thursday, August 25, 2016. Born January 3, 1931 in Chapin , he was a son of the late Arthur E. and Mary Ella Frick Summer. He was a 1949 graduate of Chapin High where he was a member of the first football team and the first class to graduate with a 12th grade. He graduated Newberry College, married Cathryn Huffstetler and was drafted into the United States Army all in 1953. After two years of service, he returned home and became employed by General Electric which then became North American Philips. He retired after a combined 39 years of service. He served five terms on Chapin Town Council, served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Chapin High School Eagle Club, was a former member of the Chapin Ruritan Club and was involved in little league sports as a coach for many years. He was a founding member of the Chapin Fire Department in 1965 and served as a volunteer firefighter for 30 years. In his former congregation, he was a member of church council, secretary and treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. In 1971 he joined Mt. Horeb Lutheran church where he served on church council as well as vice-chair of the council, was a member of the Interaction Sunday School class, was an usher and offering counter. He was long-time Clemson supporter and loved gardening, especially growing tomatoes and green beans. Mr Summer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cathryn; three children, Carol (Rusty) Thomas, Keith (Gina) Summer and Deena (Joey) Bishop; six grandchildren, Summer (Ryan) Gerth, Trey (Jessica) Thomas, Blake Summer, Kyle Summer, Luke Summer and Ella Bishop; and three great-grandchildren, Cord and Sophie Gerth and Hope Thomas. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, William David Summer; sisters, Mildred Frick, Lurline King, and Faye Monts; and brothers, Richard and Joe Bennet Summer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 27, 2016 in Mt Horeb Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Horeb Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mt.
