Elaine Smith Story, 68, of Columbia, died Sunday, May 27, 2018, after a lengthy battle with corticobasal degeneration.
Born on May 11, 1950 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ethel Suber Smith. Following graduation from Newberry College in 1972, she worked for several years as a social worker at Whitten Center, Clinton, SC. Elaine continued her career with Bank of America and then NBSC.
She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia. Elaine was an avid reader and also loved animals, flowers, and travel, especially to the beach and mountains. She was a giving lady full of compassionate ways. Her family and all who knew her will miss her dearly and will always remember and cherish her wonderful smile and contagious laugh.
She is survived by her husband, Don Story; son, Will Hood of Columbia; daughter, Lauren Hood of Columbia; sisters, Sandra S. Higingbottom of Batesburg and Frances S. (Danny) Abrams of Newberry; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as her two dearest friends since childhood, Jan Cromer Lowrey and Judy Wise Whitehead.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, June 3 at 3:00 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry, SC.
The family will receive friends following the service.
