Obituary

Elizabeth Bettie Caldwell Brown Summer 95 widow of Thomas Roy Summer Jr. and formerly of Springfield Place Newberry died Sunday November 3 2013 at National Health Care Columbia. Graveside services were conducted at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday November 5 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. Mantle Nance and the Rev. Tim Erskine. The family did receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 AM Tuesday prior to the service at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Mrs. Summer was born on July 3 1918 in Newberry South Carolinathe only daughter of the late Nina Bartlee Gibson and Wilson Caldwell Brown. Miss Bettie was a graduate of Winthrop University. She was member of the Newberry ARP Church and the Morning Womens Circle. Mrs. Summer taught school in Estill Rock Hill and for twenty-one years in Newberry where she sponsored the Junior Beta Club. She was a member of the Newberry County Retired Teachers Association and served as a lifelong member and past president of the Literary Study Club. Miss Bettie touched everyones life. She never met a stranger and kept her sense of humor for all of her 95 years. She was proud of the fact that she was one of the first residents at Springfield Place where she lived for 15 years and she loved all her buddies there. In recent years Mrs. Summer could often be found enjoying a bite to eat every Thursday at The Grille on Main. Mrs. Summer is survived by her daughters Elizabeth S. Akers PhD and Ann Wilson Summer and her husband Wayne Green all of Columbia; grandchildren Paul Summer Akers of Columbia; Elizabeth Bartlee Akers Davis of Charleston and her husband Scott; Caroline Gibson Akers PhD of Columbia; and a great-grandson Clayton Joseph Davis. In addition to her parents and her husband she was predeceased by a son-in-law Paul Clayton Akers MD. Pallbearers were Henry Baker Summer Ralph Summer Paul S. Akers Scott Davis James N. Haltiwanger Jim Pickens Robbie McCaughrin and Walter Munson Summer. The family extends special thanks to Patricia Kelly and Dana Williams for their love and care of Mrs. Summer at Springfield Place and to the caregivers at Daybreak and to everyone at National Health Care Parklane.
