Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Rice Boone of Irmo S.C. died Monday June 20 th, 2016. Mrs. Boone, the daughter of the late Rev. C. J. and Lottie Cannon Rice, was born in Pulaski, Virginia on June 3, 1926. She graduated from high school as valedictorian. She then attended and graduated from Marion Junior College in Virginia. When her family moved to South Carolina, she entered Newberry College from which she received an A.B. degree in 1945 (magma cum laude) and to which she returned to work as Assistant to the Registrar for the next four years. She and Gaines Orin Boone were married at St. James Lutheran Church in Newberry on June 3 rd, 1950. Her work after their marriage was mainly in support of his career. Along the way, she taught public school music in Ninety Six, S.C. and provided private piano, organ and voice lessons. She was a lifelong Lutheran and active in the Lutheran churches wherever she lived, holding offices in the women's organizations and serving as a member of Worship and Music Committees both locally and statewide. She was an organist and choir director at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Florence S.C. as well as substitute organist for many area churches. After her children were grown, she worked as a Rural Mail Carrier in Chapin until her retirement in 1991. Betty was involved with Newberry College activities, serving as officer of the President's Club, and president of the Newberry College Women's League. Newberry named her Outstanding Alumnus in 1978 for her work in fundraising for the renovations of Smeltzer Hall. She and her husband, G. O. Boone were given the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1981. They also received the Service to Mankind Award from the Chapin S. C. Sertoma Club. Mrs. Boone is survived by her husband of 66 years, and their children and spouses. They are; Andy and Cheyrl Boone of Chapin, S.C. and Marilyn and Dean Kimbrell of Tryon, N.C. Also surviving are her grandchildren, George Orin Boone of Columbia, S.C., Wilt Cannon Boone of Columbia, S.C., Mandy Kimbrell Psiaki and her husband Dave Psiaki of Atlanta, G.A. She has one great granddaughter, Katherine Cunningham Psiaki and two remaining cousins. Funeral services will be at 1 PM on Thursday, June 23 rd at Bethel Lutheran Church, 2081 Dutch Fork Road, White Rock, S.C. The family will receive friends there in the hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in Bethel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Boone, George Boone, Will Boone, Mervyn Derrick, David Psiaki and Mike Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Dr. Jim Aull, Johnny Derrick, Dr. Darr Wise and Dick Cameron. The family greatly appreciates the care given to Betty by Dr. Carroll Pinner, III and the staff of the Pinner Clinic. Memorials may be made to the G.O and Betty Boone Scholarship, Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, S.C. 29108 or to Bethel Lutheran Church, as listed above.
