Betsy Bird

September 16, 1939 — April 1, 2026

Chapin, South Carolina

Elizabeth Banks Bird, affectionally known as “Betsy”, born September 16, 1939, entered into the presence of her Savior on April 1, 2026. She was a devoted student of the Bible and a gifted teacher who labored so that others might know Christ through His Word.

Betsy was raised in the close-knit community of Darlington, South Carolina, alongside her younger sister, Gloria, by their loving parents, “Willie” and Marion Banks, surrounded by extended family and lifelong friends. She and Jimmy later raised their sons there as well, and in time returned home to Darlington, where friendships formed over many years remained a steady and meaningful part of her life.

The Lord shaped Betsy’s life through several defining works of His grace.

The first was her marriage to Jimmy, with whom she shared both a deep love for Christ and a deep love of family. Betsy met Jimmy, a Citadel graduate, on a blind date, and just several months later left Columbia College to begin her life as his wife. Their early married years included military life in Germany and a season during Jimmy’s deployment to Vietnam when Betsy returned to Darlington with their young sons. During that time, the Lord graciously brought Jeannyne Greer and her family into their lives, forming a lifelong bond centered on shared faith and friendship.

While living in Germany, though raised in the church, Betsy described herself as a self-proclaimed atheist. During long seasons alone while Jimmy was in the field, she began searching deeply for truth and cried out to the Lord, asking Him to reveal Himself if He was real. Though she sought answers from the post chaplain, it was the Lord Himself who opened her heart and granted her faith. As Scripture teaches in Romans 10:17, “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” From that time forward, Betsy possessed a settled confidence that God had spoken and that the Bible is true.

Because she believed God had spoken in His Word, Betsy gave herself to studying and teaching the Scriptures, convinced of 2 Timothy 3:15–16, that the Scriptures make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ and equip us for life.

In 1977, Betsy and Jimmy began leading Precept Bible studies in their home in Darlington with a small group of seven people. As the group grew, the study moved into the church. Then in 1980, sensing God’s call upon their lives, they gave away Jimmy’s life insurance business and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, home of Precept Ministries, where they served from 1980–1998.

During those years, Jimmy developed the international arm of the ministry, and Betsy served as Director of Publications and Training. In that role, she developed training resources designed to help believers study the Scriptures carefully and handle them accurately. She longed not only to teach the Word herself, but to equip others to do the same, recognizing that training leaders would allow the truth of Scripture to reach far beyond what one person alone could accomplish.

She developed workshops and training materials that helped leaders learn how to observe, interpret, and apply the Bible faithfully. Her vision was to multiply faithful students of Scripture by training trainers who would in turn train leaders, resulting in Bible studies taking place throughout the nation and around the world. Her sons recall the many years she spent at her desk studying the Scriptures with great care, seeking above all to handle the Word of God rightly and help others do the same.

After returning to Darlington to care for her mother, Betsy founded Just for Women Ministries, through which she wrote numerous Bible studies and taught more than 600 women throughout the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. Her desire was that each woman would learn to study the Bible for herself and know the Lord more deeply.

In May of 2015, Betsy suffered a severe brain aneurysm. At Jimmy’s request, the elders came to pray for what he lovingly called “the love of his life,” and the Lord graciously granted her recovery. Though she was no longer able to lead such a large Bible study ministry, her love for God’s Word remained unchanged.

In later years, Betsy and Jimmy moved to Chapin, South Carolina, where they lived with Treye and Marina and were grateful to be near family as they finished out their lives. Even then, her desire to see others know Christ through the Scriptures remained strong. She began leading a small Bible study in her lakeside home, continuing to open the Word with these women up until the Lord called her home.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, “Willie” and Marion Banks; her sister, Gloria; and her beloved husband, James Edward Bird, Jr., with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Together they shared their lives, their family, and a commitment to making Christ known through His Word.

She is survived by her sons, James Edward Bird, III (Treye) and his wife, Marina, and William Bradley Bird and his wife, Melissa; along with her grandchildren, Rachel Bird, Wesley Bird, Alex Pritchard, Adriana Prichard, Caroline Grimes (Michael) and their children, William, Thomas and Mary Carlisle; Karis Loewen (Jordan); Lizzie Bird and her son, Banks; and Anna-Bradley Collett (Crawford). She was known with special affection as “Bebe.”

Among all the students she taught throughout the world, those she most longed to love and follow Jesus were her children and grandchildren. During family beach trips, she intentionally spent time with each one, encouraging them personally to trust Christ and walk faithfully with Him. She urged them to follow her example of reading through the Bible each year, believing that knowing the Lord comes through knowing His Word. May her legacy continue in the Bird family for generations to come.

Psalm 119:97“Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”

Having lived for Christ, she now rests in His presence, where faith has become sight and hope is fully realized.
