Obituary

Ethel Leila Corley Davis Boulware Mayer of Newberry, 90, died on Monday, July 26, at her home. She was born January 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Homer Edward and Annie Sue McCary Corley of Newberry. She first married the late Neal Davis of Newberry and was later widowed by Oriel Thomas Boulware of Whitmire and Grover Albert Mayer of Peak. Mrs. Mayer, a Newberry High School graduate, worked at the Kendall-Oakland plant for over 30 years as a battery filler and weaver. She often worked double shifts —and started her own catering business— to help her children with education expenses. She served as secretary and treasurer of the Ezell Bible Class at Central United Methodist Church, and she was a member of the Pine Island Club. For many years she was an active member of the Newberry High School Band Parents organization, and in 1972 former band director, the late Miss Lorraine Paris, presented Mrs. Mayer with a special award for her years of dedicated service to the band. Mrs. Mayer's family was always her primary consideration in everything she did, whether that was baking the grandchildren's favorite cookies for a family dinner or sewing a recital costume for a great-grandchild. She loved fiercely, supported strongly, and generously blessed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with her time, good humor, and many talents. She is survived by: son Robert Neal (Alice) Davis of Pomaria; daughters Susan Davis (Henry) Summer and Annie Laurie Davis (David) Dorroh, both of Newberry; daughter-in-law Jane Crosson Davis Robertson of Atlanta; grandsons Michael (Haley) Davis of Pomaria, Robert "Rob" Davis of Augusta, Walter Munson (Kira) Summer of Newberry, and Marty Dorroh (Andrea) of Silverstreet; granddaughters Melissa Davis (Kurt) Long, Janie Summer (Ernest) Cline, Buford "Buffy" Summer (Neville) Glover, Margaret "Maggie" Dorroh (Jeremy) Senn, all of Newberry, and Amber Davis (David) Castanien of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Cullen Davis, Kursten and Connor Long, Owen Cameron, Sera Summer, Caleb and Bonnie Racine, Eleanor Kitchens, Jenna, Jackson, and Josie Senn, Stella Ruth Dorroh; sister-in-law Kit Corley of Pittsboro, North Carolina; step-children Wayne (Betty) Boulware and Cathy Wilbanks, all of Whitmire, James (Ann) Mayer of Peak and Charles (Jo) Mayer of Lexington; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Mrs. Mayer was predeceased by: a beloved son, John Daniel Davis of Augusta; three sisters and four brothers; several sisters- and brothers-in-law. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church in downtown Newberry on Wednesday at 3 p.m. A visitation will follow in Henry Hall. Pallbearers will be grandsons, grandsons-in-law, and nephew Barry Shealy. Honorary pallbearers will be: members of her Sunday School Class; the attentive caregivers of Glenda's Care; the supportive team at Comfort Care Hospice; the caring professionals at Prosperity Drug Store; the Rev. David Surrett. Memorials may be sent to Central United Methodist Church, 1005 College St., PO Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108, or to a charity of your choice. A private burial will be held later at Baxter Cemetery. Whitaker Funeral Home is in charge.
